These machines were primarily used for shaping metal, wood, or other materials by rotating the workpiece against various cutting tools. The South Bend Lathe, like many older industrial machines, was built from heavy-duty cast iron and steel, making it incredibly durable and long-lasting. These machines were designed to perform precision tasks over many years, often lasting decades with proper maintenance. On a CNC lathe, turning is the most common operation. In this operation, a single-point cutting tool is used to shape a rotating workpiece. The workpiece is reduced in diameter to the desired cylindrical shape by the tool, which is rotated at a precise angle and feed rate and removes material from it as it does so. For sections with a constant diameter, the toolpath can be straight; for shapes that are tapered or curved, it can follow a programmed contour.

The "Swiss lathe machine" are a particular kind of lathe. Unlike traditional lathes, the machined material, which in this case takes the form of a long bar, doesn’t remain stationary but moves along its axis. This way of working has various advantages, especially on longer parts. The image shows the components that make all this possible: the gripper and the guide bush.
