“Gothenburg has very strict rules about carbon emissions and building energy-efficient housing,” Partner Kent Jackson recently told the Financial Times about SOM’s Karlatornet, a new, 74-story building. “So we had to learn and adapt our building practices to meet these very high standards.” Designed as Scandinavia’s tallest mixed-use building and marking Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary, Karlatornet catalyzes the transformation of the Swedish city’s riverside district. In the article, Jackson explains SOM’s approach to sustainability on the project, shaped by the city’s ambitious environmental credentials. Named the world’s most eco-friendly city for seven years running, Gothenburg aims to be climate neutral by 2030 through measures such as a public transportation system run almost entirely on renewable energy. Read on for the full Financial Times story for insight into how this new mixed-use development, “both a beacon and a provocation,” has shaped the future of the city’s urban development. Did you know that Europe is home to approximately 220 million buildings of which 75% is energy inefficient? Our buildings account for over 40% of the continent's total energy consumption and contribute 36% of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 📉 We need to change these figures – and not merely because of the climate change. Nearly one-third of European buildings are over 50 years old. Aging buildings require renovations to preserve and increase their value but also to ensure that they remain safe and healthy for people and become more environmentally friendly. 👉 Currently, only 1% of European buildings are annually renovated. Energy renovations help to reduce GHG emissions, improve the quality of living and cut costs in the long run. At Sustera, our vision is to accelerate the change towards more sustainable construction and building management. We are specialized in sustainable property lifecycle management from sustainable design and green building practices based construction to cost-effective maintenance and development. We have strong expertise in energy renovations and can ensure that energy efficiency requirements are met while lifecycle costs are kept in balance. Let us assess and advise you to make your buildings better for people and environment - and more valuable investment for you. ◾ Raksystems Group is now Sustera Group. ◾ #Sustera #BuildingsAreForLife #EuropeanRenovationWave #SustainbleBuildings #GreenBuilding Sustera Finland & Raksystems Sverige

Renewable energy is crucial for sustainable urban development, as it reduces reliance on fossil fuels and cuts greenhouse gas emissions. By integrating sources like solar, wind, and geothermal into city planning, urban areas can lower their carbon footprint while enhancing energy security and creating economic opportunities through reduced energy costs and green jobs. The future of sustainable urban development is shaped by trends such as smart cities, which use technology to optimize resources and improve residents' quality of life. Additionally, green infrastructure, energy-efficient buildings, sustainable transportation, and the circular economy are key elements driving cities toward sustainability, promoting efficient resource use, and reducing environmental impacts. Community involvement is essential for the success of sustainable urban initiatives. Engaging local residents in planning and implementing projects ensures that these initiatives meet the community's specific needs and encourages long-term support and maintenance. Grassroots initiatives like urban gardens and recycling programs empower residents to take ownership of their environment and promote sustainable behaviors. The path to sustainable urban development relies on a combination of renewable energy, emerging trends, and active community involvement. By embracing these elements, cities can become more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable, fostering a better quality of life for current and future generations.
