#Misinformation and #Disinformation in the era of #AI presents a crucial period for our electoral politics in 2024. We are witnessing how #political #parties and and their #followers engage in sharing #false or #skewed narratives to advance their agendas, hence the inherent need for citizens to be on the alert. Five pointers to clarify and verify, to some extent, what politicians are saying: 1. Who created this (the message or information you received)? 2. For What reason (political, ideological, propaganda etc)? 3. Why (to sway voters, to make opponents look bad, etc)? 4. When (is the message an old one, when was it created, is it original, etc)? 5. Where (where was it said)? These guiding tips will help you navigate the news feed and your timeline more efficiently and effectively. Osman Abubakari-Sadiq

If anything is to take Al off the front pages, it's the #USElection. But as we near the finish line, it's clear that both Presidential candidates have been sleeping on Al. While deepfakes and bots have been popular topics during the campaign, real policy around the adoption and uptake of Al has been minimal at best. As Matteo Wong puts it in his piece in today's The Australian Financial Review, "Widespread Al policy is coming, and the next president may well steer its direction for years to come." This will no doubt have flow on effects in other jurisdictions, like Australia, where we must align with global policy is an interconnected economy. #AI #artificialintelligence #auspol #election #politics https://lnkd.in/gzfCQRY4

The Role of AI in Influencing the 2024 US Election: A Growing Concern As the 2024 US election approaches, the threat of AI being used to manipulate public opinion has become more alarming. According to a recent US threat assessment, countries like Russia, Iran, and China are increasingly using AI to spread divisive information and create fake news outlets, attempting to undermine US democratic institutions. Russia, for instance, has amplified stories about migrants to stir discord, while Iran has posed as activists to encourage protests. These efforts echo past instances, such as Cambridge Analytica's data-driven influence on elections and Russian interference in 2016. The report highlights that AI tools can generate highly realistic but fabricated content, making it difficult for voters to distinguish between legitimate and fake information. This poses a risk to social cohesion and electoral integrity, as foreign adversaries seek to exploit partisan divides. As the US prepares for a tightly contested election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, it is crucial to address the growing role of AI in political influence. 2024: the year the world is going to the polls. 🗳 In the UK, research prior to the General Election from Thinks Insight & Strategy showed the public could be pushed into boosting misleading online posts related to asylum seekers, fake voters and what to bring to the polling station. 🇬🇧 4 in 10 reacted to an audio deepfake of Keir Starmer. 👤 The number of international fact checking organisations has dropped from its 2022 height, according to The New York Times. 📉 A future threat for governments, companies and people. ⚠ Online misinformation and disinformation is on the rise, fuelled by generative AI and increased geopolitical tension. ⚔ But there is room to be optimistic as people wise up to AI and challenge their own beliefs about what they see online. 🤔 Across the Pond, Sheera Frenkel is looking at disinformation campaigns during this Presidential campaign. The public is sceptical of misleading posts. 🇺🇸 Will increased public understanding negate the need for policy and legislative intervention? 📋
