At Outreach, we know the harsh truth—85% of the youth we serve have been through the foster care system. As the number of homeless youth continues to rise in Marion County, so does this number. It’s a number that demands change. Kyle Williams, our Director of Coaching, emphasizes that at Outreach it’s not just about addressing today’s challenges—it’s about finding long-term solutions and tackling the root causes. Our youth and young adults need more than quick fixes; they need systematic changes to address the deep, systemic issues that have shaped their lives for years. We’re committed to changing the future for these young people. Together, we can reverse this trend and make a real difference in the lives of our youth and young adults in Marion County. This year’s Solidarity Journey was truly unforgettable! From Tijuana to Oceanside, we came together as a community—walking, biking, and connecting with staff, neighbors, partners, and policymakers. It was a week filled with camaraderie, hope, and a shared commitment to ending youth homelessness in San Diego County. Together, we showed love, listened to young people, and reminded them that they are at the heart of the solution. ❤️ But this journey wasn’t just about walking—it was about making real, tangible progress. At the YMCA of San Diego County’s Youth & Family Services, we’re helping to create a lasting impact: ➡︎ Over 1,000 young people supported with housing, case management, and resources last year. ➡︎ 147 young people found stable housing through our transitional programs. ➡︎ And with the support of our community, funders, and partners, we’re expanding services every day. When we focus on supporting young people, the impact goes far beyond today. Half of all adults who’ve experienced homelessness faced it before age 25. By helping young people build stability early, we can reduce homelessness and build stronger communities for everyone. And our work isn’t done yet. Ending youth homelessness takes all of us—and YOU can be part of the solution. Advocate for policies that support young people, get involved in community action, or consider giving. Let’s keep this momentum going and make sure every young person has a safe place to call home. 🏡 Visit sojocali.com for more information. #SolidarityJourney #EndYouthHomelessness #YMCA #SanDiego #CommunityImpact #StrongerTogether Todd Tibbits Krysta Esquivel, MSW David Baker Justin C. End homelessness in America. We believe ending homelessness in America begins with a sandwich. Our goal, beyond simply providing a PB&J sandwich to those in need, is to acknowledge and recognize the often overlooked homeless individuals and families in our community. When you see those experiencing homeless, one of the questions you may ask yourself is, “What more can I do?” We pray that what begins with a PB&J sandwich grows into much more for those who serve. In small ways, each of us can address homelessness in America. And together, we can end it. Our approach covers three initiatives to fulfill our vision: Educate Advocate Allocate Education represents increasing public awareness. Advocate is increasing support to not only host a PB&J Day, but to seek policy change and expanded community support to develop solutions. Allocate is the giving of our time, talent, and treasure (physical or monetary resources) to support PB&J Days and beyond. To learn more about how you can start a PB&J Day in your area or support us directly in San Antonio, please go to our website, pbandjdays.com. #food #SpreadKindness #pbandjdays #MakeADifference #help #service #homeless #endhomelessness

As we continue to highlight that housing is essential for every human being, we must also understand the complexities of being unhoused. One of the fastest-growing populations suffering from homelessness is seniors. With inflation impacting everyone, it hits those on fixed incomes the hardest. What saddens me most is that as you age, your body starts to decline. Can you imagine being homeless with limited access to medical care and nowhere to heal from your medical conditions? Through Medi-Cal reform, temporary solutions like Post-Hospitalization funding can provide individuals with temporary housing as they heal, while simultaneously working towards permanent housing solutions to ensure they do not return to homelessness. Let’s spend more time being understanding and take action to help our fellow man.
May is #OlderAmericansMonth, a time to recognize older Americans' contributions and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities. This year's theme is "Powered by Connection," meant to recognize the massive impact meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Did you know nearly one quarter of people experiencing homelessness in 2023 in the U.S. were 55 or older? That number is expected to grow exponentially by 2030, with many of these people experiencing homelessness for the first time. Homeless services recognize the healing power of social connections. What organizations support older Americans experiencing homelessness through fostering social connection and enrichment? 👇 Let us know in the comments! 👉 And then click here to learn more about elder homelessness and access the Council's resources on the topic: https://lnkd.in/gm6-pRRv

I think a lot about where our 40,000 homeless, couch-surfing & dislocated young people will be this holiday season in Australia. They have fled #violence and #abuse in their homes, #family breakdown or may be from out-of-home care or juvenile detention. So what I think about more is how bloody wrong it is for any young person to be without a place to call #home and how it could, and should, be prevented at any cost. The social and economic cost benefits of this real and present #crisis have all been calculated - it will be cheaper, better, safer, more productive to have young people 'off the streets'. But, AND, there is so much more to this.... our basic care and compassion drives a very human desire to want children and young person to have a safe place to live, learn, grow and dream of a future. #Foyers are one of the evidence-based and proven solutions we already have in #Australia to address youth homelessness. We are calling for more Foyers to be built to support thousands of young people on the path to independence and adulthood. We CAN actually end #youth #homelessness, it is completely within our reach. We can demand this as citizens and taxpayers of our federal and state #Governments. So let's double down and get it done 👊 Clare O'Neil #AnthonyAlbanese #PM #50Foyersby2030 #noyoungpersonleftbehind #noexcuses #tiitsdone
On the first day of Christmas, let’s talk about the gift of hope 🎄 Every night, thousands of young people across Australia face the harsh reality of homelessness. Six in 10 young people presenting to Specialist Homelessness Services needing medium term housing support are turned away due to lack of options. Youth Foyers are a proven, shovel-ready solution to change this story. They provide safe, secure housing for up to two years, combined with tailored support in education, employment, and essential life skills. More than just a roof over your head, Youth Foyers deliver pathways to a brighter future. Together with our community partners, we want to build new Youth Foyers across the country, with locations proposed at Wyong, Dubbo, Tweed Heads, Glen Innes and Armidale, Western Sydney, Brimbank, Lilydale, Mildura, Inner Gippsland, Alice Springs, Albany, Broome and Mango Hill. This Christmas, let’s give the gift of hope and opportunity to young people that need it most. #10NewFoyers #50FoyersBy2030 #YouthHomelessness #housingcrisis #housingsolutions #YouthFoyers #12DaysOfChristmas #EndYouthHomelessness #TheFoyerFoundation #GiveTheGiftOfHope

This Homeless Youth Awareness Month, and all year round, let’s pause and reflect on the young lives affected by homelessness lives filled with hope, potential, and resilience that often goes unseen. At Safe Horizon Streetwork Project, we meet these youth where they are, offering more than just shelter – we provide safety, support, and a community that believes in their potential. Programs like ours are vital because they’re more than a lifeline; they’re a springboard to a brighter future, helping youth find stability, healing, and a path forward. Every night, thousands of young people face the harsh reality of not knowing where they’ll sleep. For some, it’s couch-hopping; for others, it’s shelters or even the streets. But their strength and dreams persist, shining brightly in the face of unimaginable hardships. They’re students, artists, aspiring leaders, and change-makers who are simply looking for a chance to be seen and supported. These youth are not defined by their housing status they’re defined by their courage and drive. But they need us to amplify their voices, to rally around their needs, and to fight for the opportunities they deserve. This month, and all year round, let’s commit to raising awareness, showing compassion, and driving change. They may not have a permanent address, but they should always have a place in our hearts.
