Recently, The New York Times' Amos Zeeberg spotlighted a few BE companies revolutionizing energy storage across the world. In Sardinia, Italy, Energy Dome tackles local electricity market imbalances with its carbon dioxide-powered storage system. In a first-of-a-kind project supported by BE’s Catalyst program, Energy Dome uses a giant balloon storing carbon dioxide as a renewable energy battery. Meanwhile, in Somerville, Mass., BEV company Form Energy pioneers affordable, long-lasting energy with its iron oxidation technology, promising up to 100 hours of power. These companies demonstrate how technological creativity and innovation can be the key to unlocking a decarbonized electrical grid. Learn more. https://nt-z.ro/3vDALws

LevelTen Energy joins industry leaders to advocate for the rapid implementation of Granular Guarantees of Origin (GOs). From my personal point of view, it is the only logical evolution of GOs, and the only way forward, more now that the Renewable Energy Directive enables it. To be more specific, Granular GOs offer several benefits, among others: --> They will be needed for verification of Green Hydrogen. --> They create signals for flexibility and value of the (renewable) energy. --> They will enhance voluntary claims, limiting greenwashing. “Renewable energy valleys (REVs) represent a transformative concept poised to reshape global energy landscapes. These comprehensive ecosystems transition regions from conventional energy sources to sustainable, self-reliant hubs for renewable energy generation, distribution, and consumption. At their core, REVs integrate advanced information and communication technology (ICT), interoperable digital solutions, social innovation processes, and economically viable business models. They offer a vision of decentralized, low-carbon landscapes accessible to all, capable of meeting local energy demands year-round by harnessing multiple renewable energy sources (RES) and leveraging energy storage technologies.” https://lnkd.in/eAsSUhgW

A Finnish renewable energy startup, Polar Night Energy Oy, has installed the world’s first sand battery that stores heat from renewable energy for months, a simple yet innovative solution to consistent year-round energy supply. This breakthrough is significant since heat accounts for half of global energy use, with most energy currently coming from fossil fuels. The massive steel silo, filled with sand, was installed in Kankaanpää and connects to the town's heating network. Unlike water-based systems, sand can be heated to 600°C and retains heat longer, making it more efficient. With potential for use in various industries worldwide, this technology could revolutionise how we store and use renewable energy.
