If your argument is that the shift to green energy in America gives other countries a competitive advantage, your sources need to be fact checked. Countries like China have made more progress in the green energy transition than every other country COMBINED. Free yourself from the propaganda of big oil lobbyists and wake up!

Our Energy Transition Director Matt Browell-Hook is speaking in Energy Voice this week about the UK's fantastic potential to provide the carbon storage capacity necessary to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries like cement production ... and the simple, pragmatic policies needed from government to make it happen. He said: "The UK has enough total storage capacity to hold two centuries’ worth of its current emissions, and a pipeline of innovative projects capable of capturing approximately 94 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually – as well as an already world-leading offshore energy sector. We can make the UK’s CCS sector an international success story, but only if we provide the necessary conditions." Spirit Energy is supporting this with our plans to create a billion tonnes of carbon storage in the depleted gas fields at Morecambe Bay, decarbonising 40% of the UK’s cement and lime industry through the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) project, in partnership with Peak Cluster. We want to work with all stakeholders to turn ambition into reality and build on the great progress already made. Check out Matt's op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/eqSzP6uJ

This new exclusive article by Reuters highlights the fact that the methods with which we power the globe is not a straight line of technological low-carbon development but will be a combination of a variety of types of fuels, including traditional and renewable based sources, for the foreseeable future. Each country will have to engage in a rigorous policy debate and decide on the approach that is optimal given their local natural resources and ability to lower carbon emissions while still generating the sources of fuel it needs. https://lnkd.in/gC6xK2ua

This is a transcript of a letter sent by Sustainable Energy Now vice-chair Dr Rob Phillips to his local Federal MP Tracey Roberts MP on the recent Future Gas Strategy which echoes SEN nuance position in the phase out of burning fossil gas in WA. Hi Tracey Thanks once again for meeting with me - I'd just like to follow up on Labor's Future Gas Strategy. I'm concerned that this strategy is based on a narrow view of the available information, and it is not consistent with the climate and environmental policies that you said Chris Bowen MP and Tanya Plibersek were passionate about. Below is information that may help you to understand the issues. - There WILL be a need for gas in the medium future to 'firm' renewable energy supplies when the weather isn't favourable. However, gas use will decline to about 15% of current amounts as renewables are rolled out. Even the Australian Energy producers accept this. See https://lnkd.in/gfcWicB2 - There WILL be a need into the future for petroleum products (including gas) as a feedstock for chemical production - plastics, etc. - There WILL be a need for gas for some industrial processes, but this will decrease as government decarbonisation initiatives take hold. In other words, national gas use will decline, but there will be a need for an ongoing supply. However, the Future Gas Strategy is claiming that we need a massive expansion in gas production, for export, and that north Asian demand for Australian LNG will remain strong. Recent research by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) provides evidence that this is not the case. https://lnkd.in/g4dHUYxk . This work shows: - demand in North Asia is decreasing - Japan has contracted excess amounts of LNG that it is now selling to other countries - Large amounts of new gas capacity will come online soon from Qatar and the USA. The claims in the Future Gas Strategy that Australia needs to increase its LNG export capacity are questionable, and will benefit multinational corporations that pay little tax and minimal royalties. If this increased LNG export capacity is through the Burrup Hub development, another problem arises. Work that Sustainable Energy Now is about to publish with Climate Safe Solutions shows that there will not be sufficient reserves of OFFSHORE gas to feed the Burrup Hub export facility in the longer term. That will either mean that the Burrup Hub becomes a stranded asset needing to be bailed out by Government, OR that onshore gas earmarked for domestic use will have to be exported. In other words, a lose-lose scenario. As I said in our meeting, what is needed from Government is a Gas Exit Strategy. We will still need gas, but does that mean that we need to massively increase its use and export? Regards Rob Dr. Rob Phillips Vice-Chair, Sustainable Energy Now http://www.sen.asn.au Ignore comments from Brad Lukies aka Brad L.
