The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is an international treaty under the Convention on Biological Diversity addresses the safe handling, transport, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biodiversity, taking into account risks to human health. It aims to ensure the safe transfer, handling, and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to minimize potential risks to biological diversity and human health, especially focusing on transboundary movements. 👌 Parliament adopted its position for negotiations with member states on the Commission proposal on New Genomic Techniques (#NGTs), which alter the genetic material of an organism, with 307 votes to 263 and 41 abstentions. 🔎 For a more sustainable and resilient food system EU Parliament supports a simpler process for #NGT plants equivalent to conventional plants, while others must follow stricter rules. The objective is to make the food system more sustainable and resilient by developing improved plant varieties that are climate resilient, pest resistant, and give higher yields or that require fewer fertilisers and pesticides. ✅ Meanwhile in #Madeinplant we can be your partner for plant gene editing using the #CRISPR technique and we offer our knowledge in the use of this #biotechnology to assist you in your #breeding programs. 💚 Think green 💚 __ Source: Press release from European Parliament 7-2-2024 Photo: Pixabay

Emerging Threat: Super-Resistant Mosquitoes As we enter "mosquito season" in Japan, a new threat is emerging: super-resistant mosquitoes! Researchers have discovered mosquitoes in Southeast Asia that require 1,000 times the usual amount of insecticide to be killed. And evidence shows some have already entered Japan. This is likely due to one of the following mechanisms of insecticide resistance: - Target-site resistance: The target site where the insecticide acts in the insect may be genetically modified to prevent the insecticide binding or interacting at its site of action, thereby reducing or eliminating the pesticidal effect of the insecticide. - Metabolic resistance: Resistant insects may detoxify or destroy the toxin faster than susceptible insects, or quickly rid their bodies of the toxic molecules. - Penetration resistance: Resistant insects may absorb the toxin more slowly than susceptible insects. - Behavioral resistance: Resistant insects may detect or recognize a danger and avoid the toxin. #SuperResistantMosquitoes #MosquitoSeason #DengueFever #InsecticideResistance #Innovation #PublicHealth #MosquitoBorneDiseases

On November 1st, COP16 Colombia concluded in Cali, Colombia. Key government officials, organizations, and stakeholders deliberated on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, an international agreement aiming to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Discussions included applications of synthetic biology to help maintain #biodiversity and promote #health, such as gene drive technologies, among other topics. Within the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is a treaty to ensure the international movement of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is safe for biodiversity. The protocol includes requirements for risk assessment. At the last COP, the parties to the Cartagena Protocol requested that a group of experts draft additional and voluntary guidance for the risk assessment of GMOs with gene drive. That expert group, which included GeneConvene's Brinda Dass, developed guidance that was welcomed by the parties. This guidance will help strengthen international governance of gene drive approaches. Even-aged forests focus on growing the same-age trees in a specific location. This allows the trees to display similar characteristics in terms of height and diameter (though this can vary within a group). This method is considered to be the most economically effective option for harvesting, as loggers can predict what the outcomes will be during thinning operations or final harvests. After a final harvest, foresters can replant genetically improved seedlings, which often grow faster and are more resistant to diseases.

🌾 Exciting developments in plant biotechnology! Vittoria Brambilla's team at the Università degli Studi di Milano (University of Milan) is pioneering gene-edited rice to combat rice blast, caused by the rapidly evolving fungus _Pyricularia oryzae_. With the potential to reduce crop loss by up to 50%, this innovation is crucial for food security. Despite facing vandalism during their field trials, the project gained significant media attention, fostering public interest in gene editing. As we navigate climate change and increasing food demands, gene editing can accelerate crop development from years to mere months! 🌱#LatestPaper #ecofriendly #plantprotection Discover a new eco-defense against Botrytis cinerea: Sordaria tomento-alba! Our study highlights a sustainable path for agriculture. 👨🔬By Prof. Carlos Garrido et al In the pivotal study titled "In Vitro Analysis of the Antagonistic Biological and Chemical Interactions between the Endophyte Sordaria tomento-alba and the Phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea," researchers uncover a promising biocontrol method employing the endophytic fungus #Sordariatomentoalba, isolated from #Gliricidiasepium in Colombia, to counter the plant pathogen #Botrytiscinerea. This work highlights the critical need for sustainable alternatives to synthetic fungicides, showcasing #Stomentoalba's remarkable in vitro antagonistic effects against #Bcinerea#. The study reveals the fungus's ability to significantly inhibit growth and spore germination of the pathogen, attributed to the production of novel metabolites, suggesting a viable, eco-friendly solution to managing plant diseases.
