Very excited to read that Richborough Energy Park 2 (REP2) has cut more carbon emissions - 13,000 tonnes so far this year - according to a Modo Energy analysis. This is more than any other #battery project in the UK this year! This makes REP2 The UK’s best-performing plant! This impact on emissions is significant and is great news for the UK and the world at a time of growing alarm over the impacts of climate change. The further good news is that more battery projects are in the offing. We welcome the announcement from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero introducing the cap-and-floor mechanism for Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES). This critical development will help unlock much-needed investment in technologies like pumped storage hydro (PSH), which is essential for balancing the grid and ensuring energy security as we transition to net zero. Prioritising projects proven to be the most efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable—like our 2GW pumped storage hydro project on Loch Ness—will maximise opportunities for successful partnerships with the government and drive forward the delivery of a net zero grid. We are eager to work in collaboration with the UK government to ensure the cap-and-floor mechanism optimises grid benefits, delivers consumer value, and maximises environmental and community benefits. The increasing share of renewables in the energy mix coupled with carbon intensity reduction requires sustainable ways to store energy.   This is why the UK government is in ongoing consultations on long-duration energy storage systems. Flow batteries might become part of the UK's policy framework addressing sustainable energy.✒   Along with other technologies that are being developed to store energy and considered during the consultation, flow batteries represent a viable option as the characteristics prioritised by the UK government include fire safety, the ability to decouple power and energy capacity to provide economic advantages for longer durations, and lower degradation. 💡   Furthermore, the consultation proposes excluding electricity storage technologies such as Li-ion from the scheme, citing their eligibility for funding under existing market arrangements.   The development of the LDES policy framework is a positive step to supporting emission-free technology and recognising their benefits at the system view.🔋   Read the article below to find out more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eNsBXmvQ
