BGP Learning - RFC 8212, Recently during a IOS XR Training for a Customer, they questioned the default behaviour for a EBGP peer. This behaviour states that if No Explicit Inbound and Outbound Policy for a EBGP peer is configured, do not advertise any Route and ignore any received Routes. This behaviour is default for IOS XR since ages. But customer asked why this is not there in IOS XE. Before I answer this, for the wider audience, this behaviour serve multiple purposes and there for a reason. 1. This prevents a router from inadvertently becoming a transit router.  2. Prevents a router from advertising unintended routes 3. Prevent a router from potential crash due to receiving too many routes 4. Prevent a router from having its routing inadvertently changed. This you anyway needs to do as a part of Best Practice and Good Design, potentially using multiple methods. But what if you have a IOS XE based nodes at BGP perimeter. Well, you can enable this behaviour using below command router bgp 65000  bop safe-ebgp-policy So with this, an EBGP neighbour must be explicitly configured with both inbound and outbound policy.
