It was such an honour to interview Paul Francis Jr and Sage Laliberte to learn more about the important work that they and the entire N’doo’owe Binesi team (the Indigenous Health division at St. Joseph's Care Group in Thunder Bay) are doing. This team and organization is really demonstrating how health and long-term care organizations can take concrete steps in advancing Truth and Reconciliation, by dedicating resources, engaging with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and being thoughtful and humble throughout the journey. I am inspired by Paul and Sage’s passion, and I am so deeply appreciative of the time they spent with us. Indigenous People have a right to practice their rituals and ceremonies, and as healthcare providers, we have a duty to support those practices. At St Joseph’s, an Indigenous person living in their LTC care homes can engage in a smudging ritual in ANY space in the buildings. Indigenous ceremonies and rituals occur regularly. Indigenous Navigators support the transitions, ceremony and ritual coordination, and work from a trauma-informed lens. A Council of Elders provides guidance and wisdom to the N’doo’owe Binesi. Indigenous People are in the roles guiding and doing the work within their organization - including at the senior leadership table. Check out the article to learn more about their important work. We must question, disrupt and address the systemic racism that exists throughout our systems and establishments to support the health and well-being of the First Peoples of this Land. There is so much more that can and must be done to support cultural safety in long-term care, and healthcare more broadly. I do hope that by sharing the journey of St Joseph’s Care Group, that other organizations will be inspired, and reflect on opportunities to take action. Learn more below ⬇️⬇️

A Heartfelt Salute to #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay On this special day, I’m embracing an Indigenous tradition of sharing knowledge. A wise First Nation community member once told me, “If you have knowledge, you share it.” As someone privileged to work with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, I’m eager to pass on what I’ve learned about our collective journey towards Reconciliation, especially in the context of the #TruthandReconciliationCommission #CalltoAction92. Learning from a True Leader The Honourable Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, recently shared some insights. He emphasized that corporate leaders need to understand their role in the history and the damage done to Indigenous cultures, resources, and properties. This understanding is crucial for shaping the direction of Reconciliation from Corporate Canada. A Call for Change in Corporate Culture Sinclair’s message is clear: Corporate Canada’s responsibility extends beyond contracts and employment. It’s about a fundamental shift in our corporate culture - how we think, how we do business, and how we talk about each other and Indigenous resources. The Journey of Reconciliation In Sinclair’s inspiring words, “Reconciliation is a constant effort.” I’m committed to this journey, ready to learn, unlearn, and share my learning. In response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Silver Gummy Foundation—a Canadian private family foundation devoted to reducing gender-based violence through education—recently set out to expand our funding mandate by creating a funding category for Indigenous organizations. As we’ve done so, we’ve learned a few key lessons: ✨ Focus on relationships first, and programs and solutions second. ✨ How we show up as a foundation matters: We must be willing to relinquish control over certain types of decision-making and invite feedback on our approach. ✨ It takes time to build trust and the relationships upon which trust-based grantmaking is founded. The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. This National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the rich cultures and traditions of First Nations people across Canada.
