🌿🌍 Today, Chitra Kumar, Managing Director of our Climate and Energy program, was inspired to hear US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Michael Regan’s announcement of four final rules addressing climate and health harms from power plants. "With rigorous implementation and enforcement, these safeguards can provide essential protections for communities living in the vicinity of fossil fuel power plants, near coal ash disposal sites, or along waterways polluted by toxic waste from coal plants," said Ms. Kumar. "When all the heavy costs of fossil fuel-fired power plants are tallied, it’s unequivocally clear that clean energy presents the just and necessary path ahead," said Julie McNamara, senior analyst & deputy policy director of our Climate & Energy program. The challenges of navigating varying reporting rules across countries and states can be daunting for multistate and multinational organizations. However, defaulting to the most stringent rules may end up being the easiest route in the long run. Despite this easing of reporting requirements in the U.S., I am hopeful (ugh…possibly naively) that relaxing requirements in one jurisdiction will not slow down progress in measuring and managing carbon emissions, offsetting and ultimately capturing those as well. #Sustainability, #ESG, #Climate, #CarbonEmissions, and #Scope3 Max Messervy Helga Birgden Jillian Reid Jennifer Anderson Sarika Goel

If your business has presence in the State of California, read on. On September 27, 2024, California Governor Newsom approved amendments to California’s climate disclosure laws, which were signed into law in October 2023. The amendments are largely administrative in nature, although one amendment may make the required reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions easier for subsidiaries with parents that report GHG emissions. Further, although the governor of California had proposed a two-year extension of the timing for certain disclosures, no extension of the implementation dates was included in the final amendments.
