WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN SHAPING OUR FUTURE 🌏 One way to do that is to make a submission to the Government’s Draft Emissions Reduction Plan, but you need to do so before next Wednesday, August 21st. And we urge you to do just that. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE YOUR SAY? New Zealand has domestic climate change targets. Clean energy fuelling transport, low carbon manufacturing providing high paying jobs, lower emissions from agriculture through improved technology and forestry playing its part to help reduce carbon in our atmosphere. Are they ‘fit for purpose’? Are we doing enough? And what does this mean for us in Tairāwhiti? The Government’s latest 5-year emissions reduction plan sets out the targets and an action plan across all sectors to meet these targets. As households, businesses and communities our opinion in this is critical to our success on this journey. That’s why we urge you to find out more and to submit your submission to the Ministry for the Environment: https://lnkd.in/exYjRQrz

Polluter Pays Principle: In New York, fossil fuel companies will now pay to prepare for climate change and fix the damage it causes. On Thursday Gov. Hochul signed S.2129-B/A.3351-B, the climate change superfund law. Fossil fuel companies responsible for most of the emissions from 2000-2018 will now be liable to pay up to $3 billion a year over the next 25 years towards the newly established climate change adaptation fund.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized new regulations to drastically reduce air, water, and climate pollution from U.S. power plants, targeting emissions, mercury, coal ash, and wastewater discharges. These rules include limits on toxic metals in wastewater released into waterways and stringent controls on greenhouse gas emissions and mercury from coal and natural gas power plants. While these measures could significantly advance U.S. climate goals and protect public health, they face potential legal challenges and uncertainty with upcoming elections, which could impact their implementation.
