🌍 Biodiversity in Crisis: 38% of World’s Trees Now Threatened with Extinction At COP16, scientists sounded the alarm—more than a third of tree species worldwide face extinction, including beloved magnolias, oaks, and maples. Threatened more than birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians combined, trees are essential to clean air, carbon absorption, and habitat for countless species. In my remarks, I discuss how the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a bold vision for protecting 30% of all nations' land and marine ecosystems. COP28 further underscored the vital link between climate action and nature conservation, emphasizing that our climate goals depend on the health of our ecosystems. Cool Earth is speaking at #COP16 this week and we're advocating for Indigenous and local community involvement in rainforest protection. 🌳 Here's 3 things we want to see happen at COP16: 💰 Increased funding for biodiversity conservation that goes directly to Indigenous communities to ensure it’s used where it will have the most impact. 🍃 Indigenous knowledge to be recognised as vital in protecting nature. Indigenous communities and their wisdom should be central to all nature and climate action decisions. 🦜 Nations must address climate change as part of the biodiversity agenda, as the two are deeply interconnected. Neither issue can be effectively solved without tackling the other.

The protection of our biodiversity is critical if future generations are to enjoy the same benefits we enjoy today. The International Institute for Sustainable Development Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas #CAPA initiative recognizes the key role that protection, conservation and establishment of key biodiversity ecosystems and ecosystem services play in supporting livelihoods and human wellbeing. Let’s hope the ambition of #COP28 flows into Baku during #COP29
