  • Humans are a part of nature — so restoring our forests is about more than just planting trees. Rebuilding an ecosystem sustainably means addressing the needs of the human communities that coexist with the forest — such as shelter, food, and safety. In the Philippines, Terraformation is embarking on an ambitious new restoration project in partnership with CCCO2, a Philippine reforestation and conservation company founded in 2018. As the biodiverse forest is restored to this former colonial cattle ranch, agroforestry will enable the local Indigenous communities to grow native crops like cocoa, hemp, and millet. A few facts about this project: • 1,000 hectares, with 12,000 hectare expansion potential • 508,000 tonnes of CO2 sequestered over 40 years • Environmental co-benefits include improved water quality, reduced risk of wildfires, and enhanced erosion and flood control • Agroforestry areas will integrate crops of cocoa, hemp, and adlai (millet)  • Equal employment opportunities, including for women in leadership positions   We're excited to begin the restoration of this beautiful mountain region. Ghana’s Keta Lagoon mangroves were once the backbone of a strong fishing economy, a biodiverse habitat for endangered species, and a spectacular natural carbon sink for our planet. Today, deforestation and climate change are creating environmental turmoil — threatening livelihoods, fresh water, food security, and biodiversity. The ReDAW project offers hope: restoring a native mangrove ecosystem, creating sustainable livelihoods, and generating carbon credits to fund recovery. 🌱💧 Reducing and removing carbon is vital, especially for those on the forefront of the climate crisis. Nature-based solutions support a brighter future for communities, wildlife, and our climate. 💪🏼 Learn more about ReDAW: https://refore.st/3WI1jI3 #Reforestation #ClimateAction

  • To conserve and restore our planet's forests, we need innovative financing mechanisms that will help fund projects at the critical early stages. The Tropical Forests Forever Facility, in Brazil, is one of those ideas — one that could "ultimately pay out $4 billion a year to protect forests." "'The idea is elegant,' said Frances Seymour, a senior adviser on forests for the U.S. State Department. 'It’s exciting that it seems to have some political momentum.'” Read more (gift link): https://lnkd.in/ey_Aq-Bz

  • What a joy to gather with Arbor Day Foundation, Pachama, and Grupo Argos at our planting site in Colombia! ☀️ ⛰️ This land is incredibly special and biodiverse — the Antioquia region includes 17+ species unique to the tropical Andes, including 9 threatened species. With much of the natural forest gone, we’re thrilled to begin the journey in restoring this ecosystem. Our project, Sembrando Futuro 2.0, aims to plant 2.3 million native trees, restore habitats for wildlife, and support the local communities that call this land home. Over the next 40 years, SF2.0 will sequester 390,000+ tonnes of greenhouse gases, addressing climate change and helping Colombia in their net zero climate goal. The project has already planted 48 species native to the Antioquia region, including 5 of the region's 9 threatened species! We’re so grateful to partner with Grupo Argos Foundation in this important work and for all our friends at in the reforestation movement. Let’s plant some trees! 🌳

    CEO at Terraformation Inc.

Terraformation has installed a low-cost wildfire early detection system at our Hawaiʻi pilot site. Forests have huge potential to draw down carbon—but when they burn, the effect flips and releases carbon. Both of those factors make it extremely important to protect them. Reliable early detection is key to smart forest fire management. While some fires are a natural part of healthy forest ecosystems, early detection is essential to smart forest fire management: containing the worst wildfires and protecting lives and property. But wildfire detection systems need to cover huge areas of land, so we need very low unit-costs while remaining highly reliable. Our AI-powered sensors, made by Dryad Networks, detect early indicators of fire and send an alert through a mesh network. It’s also fast: sensors can detect fires very early, buying time for suppression crews to arrive before they grow out of control. This can help protect not only forests, but people and homes. https://refore.st/3OkGnkT Terraformation is dedicated to global forest restoration to mitigate climate change. For project sponsors and forestry teams, early fire detection helps reduce risk and preserve progress. It helps us get closer to our goal of a reforested planet, faster. In Hawaiʻi, we’re keenly aware of the toll wildfires can take. The 2023 fires that devastated Maui are never far from our minds. We’re committed to restoring and protecting this land’s native biodiversity. We’re pleased with this nature tech solution and its potential for our reforestation projects in Hawaiʻi and across the globe. To learn how these sensors create an “internet of trees,” visit our blog! https://refore.st/3CCTE5T (Disclosure: Yishan is also an angel investor in Dryad)
