Worth a quick read

Big news in big Hollywood media: Paramount is merging with Skydance, and Oracle heir turned producer David Ellison is the mogul at the head of it all. It's been a drama going on for months, involving complex negotiations with the Redstone family who owned and controlled Paramount since 1994. One of the oldest majors, Paramount Pictures was originally founded in 1914. There would be lots to say about the brand, but to be brief, the company has been struggling and their streaming arm Paramount+ is bleeding cash every month. Cost cutting measures and layoffs are on the horizon with the new ownership. I got interested in new person at the head of it all. David Ellison is the son of Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle. He showed up in Hollywood 15 years ago with lots of trust-fund money saying he loved cinema. He did spend a lot of money, though is also a hard-working, ambitious, and apparently shrewd businessman who clearly stuck it out. He dropped out of university, tried acting (Flyboys), more significantly launched a production company. While he did have a few flops (Gemini Man, Geostorm), he also has a string of big successes particularly with Paramount (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Top Gun: Maverick), and quickly got into producing stuff for streaming companies (The Old Guard, The Tomorrow War, The Adam Project, Air, Grace & Frankie). He produces and has final cut on all projects apparently. If like me you wonder why more and more high budget movies seem so bland and rehashing of things we've all seen many times before, him and his media company Skydance seem worth taking a closer look at. For a different perspective, maybe the mogul is just producing what people will watch and spend money on (what the streaming services will, maybe same difference). Tom van der Linden over at Like Stories of Old published a new video essay titled "How Modern Audiences Are Failing Cinema" in which he explores what he calls "the commodification of relatability, self-righteous moralism in cinema, and constant stimulants." It takes effort to go out of our comfort zones; to stop mindlessly scrolling videos that are served to us by algorithms, watching the same TV channel news, or whatever Netflix is pushing to our home screen. Don't get me wrong, I definitely watch dreadful films all the time, I'm not better than anyone else. It is also totally worth deliberately going out of our comfort zones to get fresh ideas and perspectives. David Ellison's company Skydance will merge with Paramount Global placing the D. Ellison as chairman, CEO. His ability to produce profitable films is shown to be mixed with a few successes and failures. His father, Larry Ellison ponied up the $6 billion for the deal and as the majority stock holder, experts question if he will be involved and how much, specifically if his right wing politics will affect the CBS news division. The article notes that the younger Ellison has been putting money in the pockets of democrats. A bigger question is how silicon valley tycoons will be able to adapt to Hollywood and the TV/Film distribution game. CEO's of other legacy studios such as Warner Brothers and Disney have yet to figure out how to tackle the shift from cable to streaming and it's unclear how David will be able to lead Paramount in this effort, however it is possible that the family's background in tech could be a benefit as the other big tech companies who ventured into the TV game have been largely immune to the traditional studio's distribution woes by avoiding cable altogether. https://lnkd.in/g3V2Y9vF

Ranking Worst to Best Paramount Movies in 2024 https://ift.tt/EX7on2d Movie studios release a number of films every year. Some are hits, some are misses, but the continual churn of storytelling is that you have to take chances and put things in theaters and online to get butts in seats and to get subscription dollars. Now, Paramount is a studio that just sold to Skydance, so we're unsure how things will look as they move forward as a company. This year, they put a lot of cash into sequels and intellectual property. And even took a chance on a big original idea. Like any place, some of the movies they made were great, while others faltered. So, what were the worst to best Paramount movies to come out this year? 'Dear Santa' Critics or audiences did not embrace this aim for a splashy Christmas release on the Paramount+ platform. It's getting views, but it's also getting a lot of hate from different groups online. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 24% 'Apartment 7A' Another twist on a Paramount classic, this prequel to Rosemary's Baby is a spooky story that debuted on Paramount+ . We don't have the numbers to see if it did well, but it was an enjoyable watch with a few scares. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 41% 'Bob Marley: One Love' This biopic failed to connect with a wide audience. Marley himself is an icon, but the movie didn't come together in a way that would be a success with the studio. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 44% 'IF' This original idea had everything going for it: famous faces, a famous director, and a favorable family rating, but the marketing never gave us anyone to hang onto and audiences didn't find it on the big screen. It's doing well on the streamer, but you can tell Paramount wanted more from this movie. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 50% 'Gladiator II' A legacy sequel that brought back one of Paramount's most successful movies of all time and gave it another chapter. It's doing well at the box office, but reviews have not been as exciting as they were with the original. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 71% 'September 5' Definitely perceived as an awards contender, this dramatic look at the Munich Olympics and the terrorism there is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that has yet to go wide. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 82% 'Smile 2' A fun horror sequel that amps up all the action in the first film and delivers on its spooky premise. This one had an even more shocking ending that got everyone talking. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86% 'A Quiet Place: Day One' The third part of the Quiet Place trilogy, this movie felt like it was a little too depressing to break out. While it did okay at the box office, it never quite became the event that the first movie was in theaters. Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87% 'Transformers One' By far, it is the best movie Paramount made this year.
