Thank you to Max ( Masoud ) Mirgoli and team for the warm welcome to #ITFworld2024. It was a pleasure discussing #deeptech with Paul Boudre and Ann Mettler, facilitated by Peter Vanbekbergen. Insights were shared on European strengths, challenges, and growth opportunities for deep tech startups. Europe has what it takes to become a global hub for Deep Tech excellence. Some of the most valuable companies in Europe have spun out from academia - BioNTech SE, Climeworks, Darktrace, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Scaling in deep tech requires patient capital, a robust ecosystem, and strategic partners for go-to-market. Global ambition is key as it is a winner-take-all game for startups building critical infrastructure. Levers to unlock the potential for deep tech in Europe include: ‣ Strengthening talent/excellence clusters ‣ Harmonizing spinout terms and reduce bureaucracy ‣ Encouraging more entrepreneurs to move into deep tech ‣ Increasing LP base and institutional investors participation ‣ Shifting government and corporations to become customers ‣ Reviewing innovation regulations I welcome your thoughts and more conversations offline.

Ekaterina Almasque, our General Partner, was recently featured in Sifted, discussing Germany’s deeptech landscape. In recent years, Germany — and, in particular, the Bavarian capital Munich — has emerged as a top hub for deeptech startups and talent. This year, German deeptech companies have raised €1.7 billion across 78 deals. Notably, some of Europe's largest deals in 2024 have been German deeptechs. However, more funding is needed to bring German deeptech to market. “Germany's deeptech ecosystem is ripe with asset-heavy technologies — the most demanding area financially — which puts it at a further funding disadvantage compared to the French market which leads in the less capital-intensive fields of AI and biotech”. Spent my Friday afternoon with Adam H. Phillips, Darius Clair and the Techstars team as part of their applicant screening committee for the next Techstars Washington DC accelerator! A few things jumped out at me: 1. The best ideas? They're coming from folks who really get the problem they're trying to solve. You can tell when someone's heart is in it and have the experience to back it up. 2. A strong, concise narrative and storytelling will always be important to stand out. 3. AI is everywhere! Almost every pitch had it. But it wasn't just all buzzwords - some teams are going much deeper into the power of AI/ML: The AI standouts were: • Using data to actually tell us something useful • Predicting stuff that matters for their customers • Automating workflows to drive real productivity and efficiency • Using AI in creative ways (multimodal) to get a fair, unbiased views and outcomes I love all things emerging tech and growth in the startup world. Lots of great choices for their next cohort--especially given I only saw 1/4 of the applications. Can't wait to see which ones go through.
