This year’s theme, '𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐣𝐢𝐧𝐠+𝟑𝟎: 𝐔𝐍𝐢𝐓𝐄 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬,' calls for urgent action to address the systemic inequalities and violence affecting women and girls nationwide. Every year, the 16-day campaign runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until December 10 (Human Rights Day). Today marks the beginning of the 16-day International Women’s Anti-Harrasment campaign which will be observed throughout the world including Bangladesh. 🤝 At YPF, the RHRN team and Gender & Inclusion Policy team will mark these 16 days with powerful posts, meaningful discussions, and strengthened advocacy to amplify the fight against GBV. Every 1 in 3 women in Nepal experiences some form of GBV during her lifetime. These are not just numbers—they represent shattered dreams, suppressed voices, and lives burdened by injustice. Today, I had the opportunity to participate as a panelist in an event jointly organized by 'Hami DajuVai' and 'People in Need' on the engagement of men and boys to end gender-based violence organized on the occasion of #16daysofactivism. I would like to share some important points from the panel discussion: 1. There are three main obstacles to women's rights here in Nepal: first, the family and their perspective on the value of the girl child; second, our processes and structures; and third, the lengthy legal procedures. – Kamala Parajuli, Hon'ble Chairperson, National Women’s Commission. 2. We are currently reviewing our National MenEngagement Strategy to end gender-based violence and planning to expand the Male Leader Network, which advocates tirelessly against gender-based violence, to provincial and local levels. – Mamta Bisht, Chief of the GBV Section, Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens. 3. We conducted a study on masculinity in 2021. Based on its findings, we are adapting our plans, programs, and strategies. – Kriti Thapa, FCDO, UK. 4. After realizing that women's studies alone cannot solve these problems, and that we also need to study gender and sexual minorities as well as men and work with them, we initiated gender studies. – Lecturer Narahari Khatri, Department of Gender Studies, TU. 5. Today marks the kick off this important global campaign, my thoughts are with the alarming and heart-wrenching cases of femicide in Kenya. Far too many women are losing their lives to violence, often at the hands of those they trusted as protectors. This is a stark reminder of the deeply ingrained gender inequalities and societal factors that perpetuate such heinous acts. While the recent remarks by the President signal recognition of this crisis, urgent action is needed. The bodies tasked with upholding justice and protecting our communities must demonstrate their unwavering commitment to ending this scourge. Perpetrators must be brought to book swiftly and decisively, sending a clear message that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated in our country. Let us use this period of activism to not only raise our voices but to demand accountability and sustainable solutions.
