Today marks the start of COP16 Colombia: the Convention on Biological Diversity 🇨🇴 🌎 This week we'll be sharing three stories of pilots working to innovate to conserve and nurture our fragile ecosystem, starting with a team testing deep-sea cameras for use by developing nations 👀 Around 65% of our oceans are deeper than 200m, and they hold huge questions around the biodiversity within and the function of deep sea ecosystems. But very few nations have the technical, human and financial resources to conduct deep-sea research. In 2022, FCDO Pioneers Patrick Halling, Kylie Bamford and Melissa Dawson worked with Cefas to run early stage testing of innovative, affordable cameras, which are now being tested around the world with interested government agencies 👏 We'll keep sharing stories throughout each Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations: 📆 Oct: Convention on Biological Diversity 📆 Nov: Convention on Climate Change 📆 Dec: Convention to Combat Desertification Let’s celebrate the innovators and dreamers who are turning challenges into opportunities. At COP29 Azerbaijan, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) delegation, including Dr. Salman Atif (Associate Professor, IGIS), Zia Ur Rehman ♻️ (Head of Sustainability), and Syed Asghar Ali (Assistant Manager, Sustainability), had the privilege of meeting Prof. Dr. Edgar Stach from Thomas Jefferson University, USA. The discussion focused on forging collaborations to tackle pressing challenges such as urban heat mitigation and climate change adaptation. This interaction marks the foundation of a promising partnership, as both institutions aim to combine their expertise to develop impactful solutions in sustainability and climate resilience. Following COP29 Azerbaijan, an MoU will be signed between National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and Thomas Jefferson University, formalizing their collaboration to advance joint research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. NUST remains dedicated to cultivating global partnerships and leading initiatives to effectively address climate change. Honored to Participate in the COP29 Azerbaijan Pre-Event Reception Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a prestigious reception hosting key players from companies, government agencies, and private organizations committed to addressing the climate crisis at COP29. I met with the President of Israel and with many of the participants and emphasized the pivotal role of international standards in translating ambitious climate commitments into tangible, measurable actions. 🌍 COP29 in Baku: In Solidarity for a Green World 🌍 The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29 Azerbaijan) is underway, hosted by Azerbaijan in the vibrant city of Baku. This international event brings together global leaders, climate experts, and innovators to take ambitious steps towards a sustainable future. Held from November 11 to 22 at Baku Stadium, COP29 aims to foster transparent, impartial, and inclusive discussions on the world’s most pressing climate issues. This year, the COP29 Presidency has crafted an agenda based on two key pillars: enhancing ambition and enabling action. Through this approach, they aim to drive progress across sectors and inspire real change. Obviously we are positive about commitment to creating a platform for impactful discussions and initiatives. But we are also critically looking at the real progress that will be made at this COP. With many leaders missing this COP and different agenda's on the table, it will not be a clear case that it will be able to accelerate the climate transition we need. 📣Day 3 at COP29’s World Climate Action Summit! 🌿🌍Hydrogen Powering Climate Action: Towards a Clean Energy Future with Net Zero Emissions. #COP29 CEO Elnur Soltanov shared his remarks at the China Pavilion on clean hydrogen and its derivates as indispensable molecules (to support green electrons) in our march towards a net zero world. He also mentioned the importance of public, private and philanthropic cooperation in reducing the cost, speeding up the integration and widening domestic and international certification schemes of clean hydrogen. In concluding, he asked the audience to support the Hydrogen Declaration, one of the 14 initiatives in #COP29 Presidency Action Agenda. 🤝🌿Youth-Led Climate Forum started on 13 November! The Forum will amplify the voices of young people like never before. Organised by the #COP29 Presidency in collaboration with #YOUNGO, the YCF is a platform where young climate advocates and policymakers come together to co-shape climate strategies. These forums aim to foster a strong dialogue between international youth and Parties.
