In the new BKHS magazine "For a Just Democracy" just out from the German think tank Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung, a number of us take our stab at how we collectively counter the tide of rising anti-democratic authoritarianism. As fellow author @Lea Ypi eloquently writes in her chapter: "...the radical right continues to set the agenda, making its traditional ideology once more attractive to the very subjects it leaves behind, turning ethnonationalism into the seemingly obvious response to the miscarriages of globalisation." Those who believe in democracy have to not only make the persuasive case that it actually can better deliver tangible opportunity and prosperity for those not currently finding it-- but also make it so! “Indiana is building a global economy of the future. We’re creating a state for today, for tomorrow, for 100 years from now.” -Indiana Secretary of Commerce David Rosenberg This morning, Secretary Rosenberg welcomed guests back for Day 2 of the Indiana Global Economic Summit in Indianapolis and spoke about the Hoosier state’s two consecutive record-breaking years. In that time, Indiana secured roughly $72 billion in new committed capital investment. And we’re not slowing down. In the first quarter of this year alone, we landed our biggest quarter of committed capital investment ever—an astonishing $20.68 billion. Indiana is focused on getting the economy we want for our future. We’re doing it with the help of partners at this summit. #INGlobalSummit #Indiana #economicdevelopment #partnership

ACTION ACADEMY 2024: DEMOCRACY AND THE POLITICS OF MEMORY Last week, the 2024 Humanity in Action Democracy Fellows got together in Berlin for the Action Academy. It was the first time our Fellows met in person and had the chance to build connections and collaborate. We also spent time learning about Germany’s complicated relationship with its past -- this included a visit to the Humboldt Forum to discuss the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace and the display of cultural artefacts from African countries. This year, under the theme of 'Democracy and the Politics of Memory,' our Fellows are exploring questions such as: who gets to decide what is remembered and what is forgotten? What role do history and memory play in accountability processes? How are historical narratives used to impact present-day political discourses and decision-making processes? How do the politics of memory change current political landscapes? We are grateful for the opportunity to meet these Fellows in person and look forward to seeing how their projects take off!

With nationalists on the rise, we need inspiring narratives in order to turn anger into hope. Looking at #IndustrialHeartlands in Germany and the US, John Austin, Director at Michigan Economic Center, argues that anti-democratic sentiments must be countered. We’re excited to share his paper on strategies against transatlantic anti-democratic and populist trends, particularly prevalent in economically declining communities. The paper delves deep into the root causes of dissatisfaction, emphasising economic decline, geographic inequality, social alienation, and political disillusionment as key drivers. To address these issues effectively, Austin advocates for: 🎯 empathetic leadership that meets constituents where they are, 🎯 local empowerment that gives residents the opportunity to shape the future of their own community, and 🎯 narrative reframing based on credible messages of hope. Austin concludes with a powerful message: policymakers have the opportunity – and responsibility – to survive democratic crises by actively listening, connecting, and creating inspiring narratives. Together, progressives can navigate these challenges and build a more just and inclusive society. Read his paper “Beyond the Anger and Anxiety” here: https://lnkd.in/exc8VHMY In his accompanying report, John Austin reflects on the pivotal lessons learned during our Industrial Heartlands Study Tour in November 2023. From Charleroi to Saarland and Saxony, we delved into the core strategies for revitalising former industrial regions. In Place of '#Global #Democracy' by Michael Saward In this paper I discuss something that is not ‘global democracy’. That notion too easily names something whose shape (as if it could have a shape) is for now unknowable. I begin by sketching key reasons for caution about invocations of ‘global democracy’. Laslett was right to say we need to think more about political forms – where do transnational ones come from, how do they crystallise and become formalised? Are new procedures ‘designed’, or do they emerge from what a range of institutions and actors do and create? I move on to look at the unavoidable particularity of invocations of global democracy, in terms of varying narratives and emphases. I then sketch an alternative, reflexive and focused way to think about democratic practices in transnational spaces. ... https://lnkd.in/eMRH9KB5
