🧠Lessons Learned from the Co-Founder of Mid-Day Squares 🍫 I had the opportunity to attend an inspiring talk from Jake Karls, the co-founder of a chocolate bar startup at Babson College, and it resonated with me as an entrepreneur. Here are some key takeaways that I’m excited to apply to my own journey: 1. Storytelling is Everything – Stories create trust and evoke emotion. They’re not just a way to market; they’re a bridge to a genuine connection with your audience. When your story is real, customers feel it and are drawn in. 2. Authenticity is the Future—Transparency isn’t a trend; it’s where all successful businesses are headed in terms of their marketing. The days of hiding behind polished, “perfect” branding are fading. Customers want the truth and value businesses that offer it. 3. Embrace Adversity & Strive to be an Outlier – Adversity is a privilege; outlier decisions lead to outlier results. We often tend to conform to normality, but this conforming to the “average” as entrepreneurs will never lead to our lofty ambitions coming to fruition. These concepts are universal, whether you’re selling chocolate or building something entirely different. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Thinking back on my entrepreneurial journey, I'm reminded of my humble beginnings. My first business venture was selling boiled eggs in school as a 100-level student. Yes, you read that right - boiled eggs! I thought I had identified a genuine need - convenient, healthy snacks for busy students. But, despite my enthusiasm, my venture faced several challenges. I didn't know how to market my goods effectively, and being a new face in the hostel, people didn't know or trust me. To make matters worse, the eggs would spoil if not sold, leaving me with an unwanted snack (which, I must admit, I enjoyed). The biggest lesson I learned was that just because something solves a problem doesn't mean people are willing to pay for it. I assumed demand would be high, but reality proved otherwise. The profit margin was also painfully low. Despite the setbacks, this experience broke me into the waters of entrepreneurship. I learned valuable lessons that have stayed with me: Lesson 1: Validate Your Idea Don't assume demand exists. Conduct market research to validate your idea. I wish I had spoken to potential customers before investing in eggs. Lesson 2: Marketing and Sales Matter Knowing how to market and close sales is crucial. I cringed at the "nos" and never mustered the courage to market my eggs again. If only I knew then what I know now! Lesson 3: Comfort Zone Expansion Stepping out of my comfort zone was terrifying, but necessary. I learned to approach strangers and pitch my product. Lesson 4: Resilience Rejection is inevitable. Develop a growth mindset to handle setbacks and keep moving forward. Lesson 5: Adaptability Be willing to pivot if something isn't working. Don't be afraid to try new approaches. Fast-forward to today, and I can confidently say that those early lessons have shaped my entrepreneurial journey. I've applied these principles to subsequent ventures, and the results have been remarkable. 🚀 From a Rainy Day Milkshake Stall to Nationwide Phenomenon 🚀 Reflecting back on my journey, it's incredible to see how a simple observation in 2007 led to the birth of something truly remarkable. I vividly remember that rainy day in Kothrud when I stumbled upon a small milkshake stall. Amidst the downpour, people were joyfully savoring thick chocolate shakes, coming from all corners of the city. 💡This sparked an idea, little did I know that the idea would change my life forever. Investing my savings from the UK into that small stall in Kothrud was just the beginning. Through relentless dedication and a strategic approach, we transformed Cad-B (Café Chokolade) into a household name, one college fest at a time. While others doubted our unconventional methods, we thrived on the support of our loyal customers and the passion that drove us forward. 💪 Sometimes, the most groundbreaking ideas stem from simple observations. Story of my First Successful Failure. Part 1/3 - The First Step --- Despite its downfall, I consider this a success because of a long list of gains which I'll mention in the last part.
