PaxOcean proudly announces the signing of shipbuilding contracts for two state-of-the-art Offshore Construction Vessels with a renowned European shipowner. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, these vessels will support the conventional and renewable offshore energy industries, with delivery scheduled for 2027. An option for two additional vessels has also been secured. Measuring 123 meters in length with a 1,750 square meter cargo deck area, each vessel will boast a 250-tonne active heave-compensated offshore crane, DP2 dynamic positioning, and accommodations for up to 123 personnel. Key features include a full-beam hangar for two work-class ROVs, a 1000KWh battery energy storage system, and provisions for future carousel installation and moonpool operations. Designed with sustainability at the forefront, these vessels incorporate options for methanol readiness and are versatile enough to handle a diverse range of offshore operations, including subsea construction, ROV support, and inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) activities. In addition to helping to improve the performance of wind or ocean energy structures we also apply our technology and expertise to the Service Operation Vessels (SOV), Crew Transfer Vessels, (CTV) and other work boats that are required to operate offshore, sometimes in hazardous weather and extreme sea states. At Cape Horn Engineering we have developed statistical models to characterise a vessels motion in response to an irregular sea state, allowing long term operability analysis of a vessel operating in a particular location. We can assist in significantly improving safety, comfort and workability for wind farm technicians, even in the roughest sea conditions. CFD Anaylsis: Cape Horn Engineering proudly worked with Naiad Dynamics, ship motion control experts, on the CFD design optimisation for the stabilisation fins to improve the longitudinal stability of the Service Operation Vessel (SOV). SWATH vessels are known for their inherent low longitudinal stability. They have the tendency of trimming bow down at maximum speed. To overcome this issue, the vessel was fitted with Naiad Dynamics’s stabilisation system – a pair of stabiliser fins mounted on the inner sides of both hulls, a short distance aft of the bow thrusters. The effects of the tunnels on the flow into the fins and thus the ability of them to perform properly and efficiently were a cause for concern. CFD performance analysis were run for the whole vessel, including the rudders and fins, with the aim to achieve a better understanding of the correlation between rotating the fins, and regulating the SWATH’s trim. The analysis was performed over the range of operating speeds. There were two main questions to be answered during the analysis of the SWATH; Firstly, are the installed fins capable of maintaining level trim while sailing at maximum speed, Secondly, which angle attacks give neutral lift for a range of boat speeds. Australia’s leading #offshore #wind project, Star of the South, has released its latest update following five years of feasibility studies and consultation. Key project design updates include: 📌The maximum number of turbines proposed has been reduced from 200 to 150, reflecting advancements in turbine technology. 📌Turbines will be positioned to avoid high profile reefs, to protect marine habitat. 📌The gap between the ocean and turbine blades has increased from 25 m to 35 m, based on bird flight height data, to provide a safe zone for seabirds to fly and forage. 📌Established and cutting-edge technologies to reduce underwater construction noise are being explored, to ensure the right measures are in place to protect whales. 📌A ‘no trench’ construction method will be used where cables come to shore, to protect the beach and dunes above. 📌Work is underway to adapt the project’s underground transmission route, in line with VicGrid requirements. #WindPower 🔷 In addition to 37.5m WindWings®, the smaller 20m & 24m sails designed for handysize bulkers, chemical tankers, and smaller vessels, will also be manufactured & distributed by WindWaves (Spain) on behalf of the designers BAR Technologies (UK). Weighing less than 30 tonnes, the new range are extremely economical and simple to fit on both newbuilds and retrofits. The fuel-saving capabilities of the original WindWings®’ were independently validated by DNV-Maritime in May 2024. Their deployment on vessels such as the Pyxis Ocean and Berge Olympus has already demonstrated a 32% reduction in energy use per nautical mile, solidifying WindWings® as a reliable and validated choice for shipowners. Under the terms of this updated agreement, WindWaves will manage the value chain of procurement and construction of 20m and 24m WindWings®, and their installation at shipyards across Europe. Additionally, WindWaves will manage the servicing of WindWings® during their operational life cycle, alongside crew training on the operation of the wing sails. “Benefitting from our history in manufacturing for the wind sector, we look forward to supporting BAR Technologies with their new 20m-24m WindWings® and continuing the trajectory towards a cleaner and decarbonized global shipping sector.” Mr. Roberto Bouzas General Manager of WindWaves.
