❓ Do you know that the top obstacles to a successful STEM career for women are not technical skills? Women excel at innovating, problem solving, and technical capabilities in STEM but sometimes stumble over soft skills like leadership and communication. And recognizing and dealing with gender, age and technical bias is #1. The graphic illustrates that it's not just your technical skills that will make or break your career. Knowing how to deal with these barriers is an essential skill for achieving success in the competitive world of STEM. To get a PDF copy of this graphic, join with your email and it's available for download. https://lnkd.in/erB7-CdP If you want more about resolving these hurdles check out the Women In STEM Connections Program, a cohort of like minded STEM women who discuss all these barriers and more. Group sessions will be starting in June. https://lnkd.in/eYEn4w52 For targeted, private coaching support, visit my website. I'm rooting for you every day.

This morning, during a conversation with my best friend, I shared with her that I had a significant presentation scheduled for today. I expressed my feelings of nervousness and uncertainty, as I am currently dealing with several personal challenges. Balancing the responsibilities of being a single mother, serving as the CEO of a national organization, and advocating for a shift in cultural perspectives on women and work has been demanding. In response to my concerns, my friend advised me to revisit my "why" - the underlying purpose and motivation behind my actions. This advice resonated with me and reminded me of the importance of staying connected to my core values and objectives. I would like to express my gratitude to SiteNews and Russell Hixson for providing me with the opportunity to share my story and shed light on my motivations and the work we are doing to transform cultural mindsets. LinkedIn here is my WHY: 👷♀️ Ten years ago, Nour Hachem (She/Her) founded non-profit Build a Dream with the goal of breaking down barriers for women looking to enter trades and other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) careers. Today, the Ontario-based organization provides comprehensive mentorship programs, immersive career expos, and hands-on workshops. Hachem spoke with us about the barriers women face when entering these careers, how companies can retain diverse workers and how male coworkers can be allies. "Motivating women to pursue careers in trades and STEAM fields requires more than just encouragement—it demands tangible support, hands-on learning opportunities, and targeted mentorship programs." This week, I had the privilege of contributing to a panel discussion on career guidance strategies aimed at increasing women’s participation in STEM. The event, hosted by Mindshift Skills Hub as part of the Future Women Erasmus+ Project, was expertly led by Célia Tavares and Nadine Teles. It was an inspiring conversation with Ana Paula Duarte, Heitor Gomes, Katiuska Cruz, Nádia Leitão, and Susana Brás. Together, we explored the persistent gender gap in STEM fields and highlighted the urgency of collective action at all levels—starting with early education and extending to the labor market and broader societal dynamics—to bridge this divide. I look forward to engaging with other initiatives that drive meaningful progress in bridging the gender gap in STEM careers and across the broader labor market.

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." As someone fascinated with human resilience, character and adversity, I love this quote from Maya Angelou - and she knew what she was talking about! Today I was co-facilitating the WHEN: Women's Higher Education Network for women in technical and research roles at UCL. I heard many deeply inspiring stories. It was clear that the women who shared these stories used their challenges to get clarity on who they are, what their purpose is and how they want to support others. #womensupportingwomen #ifnotnowwhen #whenequality #careeracceleratorprogram #resilience

Great interview by my colleague James Devonshire ahead of International Women in Engineering Day 2024. We all know the sector has a skills and recruitment challenge, with an ageing workforce and supply currently not meeting demand. We also know that a gender imbalance still exists with women making up only 26% of the manufacturing workforce in the UK... Put these two issues together??? Surely, if we address the latter challenge we also solve the former??? #UKMfg #manufacturing #STEM #INWED24
Ahead of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) 2024, The Manufacturer’s James Devonshire sat down with Brill Power’s Carolyn H. to discuss the existential challenge of how to attract more women and young girls into STEM careers. “Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.” A well-known quote from a Hewlett Packard internal report, the hesitation that young women have when considering applying for technical positions needs to be addressed. I think it’s important for women to focus on our abilities and have the self-confidence to learn new skills and develop the resilience to approach challenges with agility and courage. Last week I was honored to join the panel for STEM ConnectHER’s 2024 launch. Part of The Asia Foundation’s Future Skills Alliance, STEM ConnectHer is a program aimed at supporting young women pursuing STEM across the Asia-Pacific region through access to mentorship and professional development opportunities. Joined by Richa Rauniar, Angeline Lin, and Sandy Walsh, we looked at strategic partnerships as a way to overcome the gender imbalance in STEM and create lasting pathways for young women to enter the field. In the semiconductor industry, to successfully navigate emerging opportunities, it is important to recognize the power of skills-based hiring and building on your T-shaped skills - both interpersonal and technical. Cross-discipline expertise is essential to stand out in an increasingly competitive labor market. As data-driven marketing firm TechTarget notes, in STEM (especially IT), individuals with T-shaped skills are in high demand, as they can better balance the technical side of innovation and help cultivate a team culture that supports this innovative spirit. Beyond individual abilities, mentoring is another crucial element for young women to engage with early in their careers. To support the ongoing development of top talent, organizations should strive to build mentoring movements within their companies and encourage the exchange of cross-generational ideas and experiences. When women have the courage to share knowledge, try new experiences, and strive to learn every day, a world of opportunities will open up. What do you do to support women in STEM? #TheAsiaFoundation #STEMConnectHER #WomenEmpowerment #Inclusion #MicronFoundation
