Hydropower has long been a cornerstone of energy generation in Southeast Europe (SEE), offering a reliable and renewable energy source. As climate change accelerates, however, the future of hydropower in SEE is increasingly uncertain. With more volatility in precipitation patterns, the countries of the region must take a proactive approach to managing their hydropower assets while considering alternative solutions. Strengthening the integration of national grids within Southeast Europe (SEE) and connecting them to the broader European grid can significantly boost cross-border electricity trade. This integration acts as a buffer during local shortages and opens up market opportunities when hydropower production exceeds domestic demand. The Energy Community has been working towards creating a more unified and competitive energy market in the region – an essential strategy given the expected climate-related challenges. In cases where a new interconnector promises positive social welfare benefits but is not financially viable, investment grants, such as those from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), can provide the necessary support. Additionally, cross-border cost allocation (CBCA) mechanisms may help facilitate the implementation of new interconnections. Over the past decade, several key interconnection projects have been planned or completed, such as the Italy-Montenegro undersea cable and the Trans-Balkan Corridor. However, beyond new physical infrastructure, market coupling could reduce price disparities between the Balkan and German markets by making better use of existing infrastructure. Expanding the development of renewable energy sources, particularly wind, solar and biomass can help reduce the region’s reliance on hydropower. If these new capacities are truly additional – rather than merely replacing existing fossil-fuel plants – and grow faster than the demand for electricity, the SEE region could build surplus capacity. This surplus would be particularly beneficial if the weather-driven excess power can be exported to external markets, which requires sufficient transmission infrastructure to connect with neighbouring regions. #hydropower #southeasteurope #drought #crossborderelectricitytrade #regionalcooperation #connectingeuropefacility #interconnections #crossbordercostallocation #supergrids #worldgrid #worldgridproject

Long-duration energy storage is the key to a sustainable energy future. Without it we are hamstrung by the ebb and flow of the sun and the wind. The UK's topography presents a unique opportunity to exploit the benefits of pumped storage hydropower. If constraints around planning, nimbyism and environmental factors can be navigated, this project would be the first pumped storage hydropower facility to be built in more than 40 years. Incredibly exciting prospect. #longdurationenergystorage #pumpedstoragehydro #energytransition https://lnkd.in/da-pSfH2

Hydropower Remains Renewable Leader Despite Climate Challenges—As the oldest renewable energy resource, hydropower is well-established as a reliable source of dispatchable energy. Yet, it is often overlooked and taken for granted. It’s commonly believed that hydro’s potential is tapped out in the U.S., but many opportunities exist to add capacity at non-powered dams and on repowering projects. https://lnkd.in/evuQsUGg #renewableenergy #hydropower
