Regional Trails Fellow, Larz von Huene, discusses the concept of "paper streets," which are planned but unbuilt streets marked on city planning and tax parcel maps. "These streets offer potential for creating trails, providing an affordable and less intrusive alternative to traditional roads. This essay emphasizes the environmental and community benefits of transforming paper streets into trails, advocating for a greener, more accessible city where people can enjoy nature and connect with neighbors while walking or biking." It's mind-boggling that the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation wants to evict the Big Reuse from its Queens site. The Big Reuse processes tons of park and food waste yearly, producing nutrient-rich soil amendment that benefits surrounding parks, community gardens, and street trees. We all understand the challenges that city agencies face (lack of funding, space), but the Parks department's argument -- that it needs the space for parking -- is not justifiable. There is ample space for both its parking needs AND the Big Reuse's compost operation. The city seems intent on killing community composting—contradicting the commitments Adams Administration has promised towards expanding green infrastructure, achieving sustainability goals, improving public space, and more. See the links in Clare Miflin's original post, below, to sign the letter of support (for organizations) and petition (for individuals). My journalist and editor colleagues -- If you're free tomorrow morning, please attend the press conference! 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽✨✨ At the “RAISE the ROOF!” benefit one of the guests observed how complicated the process of building a brand-new life plan community must be. Adding up the many steps — like organizing community support, finding land, starting a brand-new business that will satisfy state and federal regulations, and creating a construction concept — gives an idea of the depth of work that is going on month after month. 👉 Visit this article 👀 by our board member, JoAnn Schuch, to learn more about how we plan to bring this $100+ million project to fruition! https://lnkd.in/g3YnatKF

Good to see the House of Lords report 'High streets: life beyond retail?' out today. Pleased too that they've noted the High Streets Research Network's evidence on Community Improvement Districts (building on our work with Power to Change) and recommended that 'the Government should explore whether the Business Improvement District model should be expanded to require the participation of community representatives beyond local business owners'.
