The Iron Triangle: Have you heard of it? “Fast, good or cheap — pick two.” Below illustrates what I see as the "iron triangle" of hiring in the insurance industry right now, particularly for account managers, account executives, producers, and underwriters. Every carrier/broker is looking for the same person: 1. Affordable You can get them at a "reasonable" price 2. Location They're local enough to commute to your office, AND want to be in an office 3. Experienced They are "plug and play" and have a great personality The intersection where are these 3 things overlap is a small percentage of people, particularly if you are in a less densely populated area. Want someone with experience who wants to come in the office? 👉💰 Show me the money! Want someone who is affordable and local? 👉👩🏫 I hope you're great at training! Want someone affordable and experienced? 👉👩💻 Remote is where it's at! Trying to find someone who meets all 3 is more often than not going to result in you being very frustrated and taking forever to fill your vacancy, or settling for a mediocre candidate just to check all the boxes. (Or both.) Fact: I'm able to get more interest from high quality candidates when the role I'm working on offers great flexibility. Fact: Companies with flexibility and competitive pay pick up higher caliber candidates. It's a supply and demand issue. In the end, those who are able to attract and retain the best people are going to come out on top, period.
