466 candidates in 6 hours for a Tier 1 SOC analyst position. 466. Friends I want you to read this post by Rob Beard, and the subsequent comments. Here’s what I want you to understand. 1) Entry-Level cyber jobs are EXCEPTIONALLY competitive, thus you have to stand out from the crowd. 2) Recruiters DO NOT have time to dig for your skills, experience, and knowledge. If you don’t do the work of communicating well on your resume/cv, you won’t be seen. 3) Do not apply for an entry-level job in cyber unless you have at least 80% of what the employer needs. You will only disappoint yourself when you don’t get a call. 4) If you DO have 80%+ or more, than DO apply even if there are hundreds of candidates. Read Erik Cunningham’s comment. Up to 95% of the applicants aren’t even close to being qualified, so if you DO have most of the qualifications they need, apply. 5) Cover Letters have been debated. Rob cleary tells us he wants one. Err on the side of caution. 6) Employers aren’t put off by a connection. It doesn’t show desperation but interest. It helps them see you as a person. 7) Projects and Certifications matter. Go deep on the ones that matter for the role. I’m rooting for you.
Mind blowing information here… I posted a remote SOC Analyst position this afternoon, and within the first 6 hours of the posting, we have received 466 candidates. What could this mean? 1) there are a lot of people looking for work 2) there are a lot of people looking for their first cybersecurity opportunity 3) remote jobs are attractive 4) there is not a talent shortage for this level 5) there are many people in the pipeline for growing cybersecurity careers 6) no matter who you are, stay humble 7) if you want to stand out as early career candidate, you have to showcase project work, certifications, and valuable knowledge you’ve obtained at this early stage of your career 8) getting through this many people and finding the best candidate will be time consuming I will have to take the posting down now and take the next few days to get through the applicant pool. We have to hire urgently, so we can’t interview everyone, but if you meet the fundamental requirements and have taken the extra mile to write a cover letter, showcase certifications, and of course connect with me on LinkedIn, then I’ll definitely give you a shot! This will be a busy hiring project. Thank you everyone for your interest and best of luck to you. This is a good sign for the cybersecurity community!

This post is scary if you tilt it sideways. Look how many people are saturating the job market vs jobs available. Consider the percentage of people who know their stuff but are rejected because of poor interviewing skills, resume building skills, and other self marketing skills. as Rob Beard implies many of these people might have a chip on their shoulder. In a world where knowledgeable and presumably vain people can't get a white hat job helping protect against multi-million dollar threats, how many are likely to go where the money and work is and change colors? Are we creating adversaries by falsely promising jobs in cyber?

🚫 Debunking the Myth of 'Entry-Level Cyber Security Engineer' 🚫 Like this adorable little creature 🐰, many aspiring cybersecurity professionals are innocent and hopeful when entering the job market. Unfortunately, some boot camps, institutions, employers, and recruiters have misleadingly created terms like "entry-level cybersecurity engineer," flooding the market and causing stress for individuals promised immediate employment. Roles like these don’t exist in reality: Entry-Level Network Engineer Entry-Level Application Specialist Engineer Entry-Level Infrastructure Engineer Entry-Level System Administrator Engineer Entry-Level Cloud Engineer Entry-Level Help Desk Engineer Many are left disillusioned after investing time and money into these programs, only to realize that cybersecurity requires more foundational IT and networking experience. Before jumping into a program, do your research and set realistic expectations. 💡 Takeaway: Be informed and patient—focus on building solid skills and understanding the true nature of the field. Remember, you got this! #entrylevel #firstjob #Cybersecurity #CareerAdvice #ITCareers #SkillDevelopment #CybersecurityTraining #JobMarketReality #ProtectYourCareer 🌐🔐💼
