On an ending note to this year, I'm grateful to share my article published in YourCommonwealth on International Migrants' Day (December 18, 2024), where I explore migration through both personal experience and historical perspective. This one hits close, not just because I can pinpoint opportunities, challenges and solutions as an immigrant, but also how closely it is linked to my own heritage in the Indian subcontinent 80 years ago. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝘆 '𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲'? 1. The partition of 1947 resulted in one of the largest cross-border migrations in the world, and changed the socio-economic landscape of the region. 2. Across the world and throughout history, civil wars, economic deterioration continued to shape the statistics around internally displaced persons (IDPs) globally – a whopping 68.3 Million as of 2024. 3. In that spirit, migration has morphed the global socio-cultural landscape, enhancing the need to understand diversity, and inclusion even more. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The mistake of not aligning migration policies with past and current socio-economic context of host nations: take the instance of Scandinavian countries that have enabled a seamless welfare structure – however, the very macroeconomic principles that have paved way for that structure cant account for the influx of immigrants which shifts the market dynamics negatively – resulting in: 1. Mismatch of minimum wages 2. Soaring commodity prices and an egregious mix of cost-push/demand-pull inflation 3. A burdened welfare system: case in question : Norway, 2015, as underscored in the article. Yet beyond these challenges lies a powerful truth: immigrants bring not just their stories of resilience, but valuable insights, problem-solving abilities, and innovation to their host nations. Success lies in aligning long-term planning with strategic resource allocation to truly embrace inclusion. Special thanks to Clare Keizer and Chimaobi Omeye for their exceptional leadership in growing the Commonwealth Youth Network this year, connecting voices from Samoa to Australia in creating meaningful solutions. https://lnkd.in/eucCdVUD #InternationalMigrantsDay #Immigration #GlobalPolicy #Diversity #CommonwealthYouth

🚀 Competition for Global Talent: Are We Winning or Losing? 🌍 The Economist highlights an urgent issue: despite the immense benefits skilled immigrants bring, many countries are stumbling in their efforts to attract top talent. Key Points: - Immigrant Innovators: Skilled immigrants drive major advancements in research and entrepreneurship. - Government Failures: While some countries streamline processes (e.g., Dubai), others repel talent with cumbersome bureaucracy. - Opportunity Lost: Canada 🇨🇦 , the U.S., and Australia could significantly boost their talent pools with more accessible immigration policies. For us in immigration law, this underscores the need for advocacy and policy reform to harness global talent effectively. Read the full article for insights on how countries are both winning and losing in the race for top talent. 📈🌟 👓 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eyYStKTM #ImmigrationLaw #GlobalTalent #Innovation #TheEconomist #LegalInsights #TalentAcquisition

Australia’s migration system is undergoing transformative reforms to better align with our nation’s needs and future growth. At the Migration Institute of Australia’s 2024 Annual National Conference, The Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Assistant Minister for Immigration, outlined the government’s clear strategy to address labour shortages, enhance productivity, and ensure fairness in the workplace. Key highlights include: ✅ A new Skills in Demand visa with targeted pathways for skilled workers. ✅ Reforms to regional migration settings to prioritise employers in regional Australia. ✅ Strengthened legislation to tackle visa system exploitation and support vulnerable workers. ✅ Investment in vocational training and education to build a skilled local workforce. ✅ Introduction of the National Innovation Visa (NIV) to attract global leaders in advanced industries like AI and clean energy. These initiatives are guided by recommendations from the 2023 Parkinson Review and aim to ensure migration contributes to economic growth, social cohesion, and long-term prosperity for all Australians. The government remains committed to working closely with stakeholders like the Migration Institute of Australia to ensure these reforms are effective and responsive to industry needs. Let’s build a migration system that works for everyone. 🌏✈️ Learn more: https://hubs.la/Q02YXcXp0 #MigrationReform #AustraliaFuture #SkilledMigration #EconomicGrowth #LabourShortages
