Where things like plumbing stack vents and chimneys penetrate a roof, they must be properly flashed in order to help prevent roof leakage into the home. In some cases, the roofer totally ignores the need for flashing and just seals around the roof penetration (as seen in the photo on this low-pitched roof) with roofing cement which is a very poor practice. Roof cement and caulking are not flashing materials. Roofer probably figured he'd be long gone by the time that it rained next. Proper stack vent boots should be used for stack vent boots. 🌟 Fix-It Fridays! 🌟 This week's feature: Cheap Roof Repairs Gone Wrong Thank you for joining us for another edition of Fix-It Fridays, where we showcase common roofing mistakes and how to avoid them. As you can see in the picture, this customer hired the cheapest roofer, and the results are far from satisfactory. Remember, not all roof repairs are created equal. 🔍 The Issue: Cheap 3-tab shingles covered the base of a static vent, and roofing caulk was used to seal the shingles over architectural shingles. This approach created a horrific mess and resulted in more issues. What Went Wrong: 🚫 Improper shingle type is used around the static vent. 🚫 Incorrect sealing method with roofing caulk. 🚫 Overall, poor workmanship leads to potential leaks and further damage. The Right Way: ✅ Remove the shingles around the static vent. ✅ Replace the static vent. ✅ Install ice and water shield. ✅ Apply synthetic underlayment. ✅ Install the new static vent. ✅ Finish with matching shingles.
