📢New Insight Brief: Laboratories and City Halls: The Science Diplomacy-Paradiplomacy Nexus This landmark publication sheds light on the increasingly crucial role of cities and regions in addressing global challenges. Authors Eric Piaget and Philippe De Lombaerde explore how local governments are leading the way in areas such as renewable energy, industrial innovation, and environmental sustainability, often achieving more direct impact than national efforts. Key Takeaways: -Science Paradiplomacy: A new approach where science diplomacy (international scientific collaboration) and paradiplomacy (local governments in global affairs) intersect. -Empowerment Through Scientific Collaboration: Science paradiplomacy allows cities and regions to leverage scientific partnerships and knowledge-sharing to shape international policies and influence global governance. -Significance and Impact: This innovative approach represents a new pathway for global and local solutions, positioning cities and regions as powerful drivers of international relations and policy innovation. 🔗Read more about the publication here: https://lnkd.in/dbTuXksS #ScienceDiplomacy #Paradiplomacy #Innovation #GlobalGovernance #SustainableDevelopment

How do we maximise African and European R&I collaboration? Hugely encouraging reflections by Daan du Toit Department of Science and Innovation at Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence Conference: 1. South Africa has been, and continues to be, strongly committed to R&I investment: to support the big three government priorities for South African Society, and to ensure the long-term strength of 🇿🇦 science and innovation 2. South African priorities for #science, #technology and #innovation in its 10-year strategy are well aligned with the #AUEU #InnovationAgenda. 3. There is a clear commitment to be part of an African agenda through R&I that must overcome its overreliance on foreign donors (and their priorities) What I found particularly remarkable is that South African research publications have grown from 3,700 to 27,000 (2000-2022): at the same time universities have become much more inclusive - there is a lot here that Europeans can learn! But I am also inspired by the real willingness I see to discuss how we can create a new, inclusive and equitable approach towards south-south and north-south science collaboration. Our Clusters have embarked on a challenging and but truly important journey, and we need the support of policy-makers in Europe and Africa! #EUGlobalGateway Stellenbosch University EU Science, Research and Innovation European Union Delegation to South Africa Nienke Buisman Vincenzo Lorusso Heide Hackmann Luca Fontanesi Sibusiso Moyo Therina Theron Helin Bäckman Kartal Wilna Venter Hugues Abriel Xavier Jouven Anna Ledin Lynn Morris Mosa Moshabela John Gyapong #Universities #Africa #Europe

[Event Alert] Please join us for an insightful discussion at the UN Science and Technology Forum 2024 Side Event on May 9th, 2024. New South Institute Director, Ivor Chipkin, will be speaking alongside world-leading experts and government representatives on the theme "Strengthening science policy interfaces for sustainable development." The virtual event will discuss the crucial role of evidence in policymaking on a global scale. Please register using the link to participate: https://lnkd.in/dE7dzQqk Event details are as follows: When: Thursday, 9 May Time: 13:15 EST / 17:15GMT / 19:15 South African Time More about the discussion: The world faces ever more complex, transboundary challenges. Science offers a key to untangling their roots and finding solutions. At this event, expert and high-level speakers will reflect on the role of science in national and international political processes. This event will reflect on the findings of a recent research project, led by public policy scholars and experts from the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa, which aimed to gather insights from textual analysis and country-case studies to inspire and inform procedural changes at the international level. A key component of the project was to elaborate a series of detailed case studies from previously understudied Sub-Saharan African countries (including Benin, South Sudan, Tanzania and South Africa) to better understand localised meanings of evidence and local experiences of evidence-to-policy institutionalisation. Combining this evidence with systematic review the group devised policy recommendations on how evidence can be better institutionalized in international policy processes, with specific attention to the UN General Assembly. This STI Forum virtual side event will be hosted by a consortium of world-leading research institutions including the University of Bristol, On Think Tanks, the African Center for Equitable Development, Samahi Research, the African Centre for Cities, the North-South Institute and the International Science Council. Panel: This will be a moderated panel discussion, chaired by Dr. Jessica Espey (University of Bristol, UK & UNSDSN) Ambassador H.E Csaba Kőrösi, former President of the General Assembly, 77th session, Dr.Salvatore Aricò, ED International Science Council Dr Frejus Thoto, Executive Director, ACED Benin, Ivor Chipkin, Executive Director, NSI South Africa Achan Ramlat, Samahi Research

☀ Next in our #SummerReading list - in March, Science Europe together with Research Foundation Flanders - FWO and F.R.S. - FNRS organised a high level conference to bring together research organisations, policy makers, academia, industry, and civil society to highlight the importance of open, ethical #sciencecommunication in #research processes and explore the associated opportunities and challenges. The report provides an overview of the discussions on topics such as the role of science communication in policy making; combating misinformation; science communication and #artificialintelligence; and incorporating equity, diversity and inclusion in the communication process. Key messages included the need to enhance researchers' communication skills, and innovative approaches to promote public engagement to demonstrate the value of research investments and foster public trust in the scientific process.
