The continued, consistent progress of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited's (TSM) U.S. production facilities really IS good news for national security and global economic stability. Of course, the vast majority of TSM's chips will still be made in Taiwan, but the ability of their U.S. facilities to achieve comparable production yields at the leading-edge is absolutely critical. Like many people, I'd love to see Intel step up to the plate and regain some of their former glory in this regard. However, years of poor manufacturing decision making has long since cost Intel their once best-in-breed status. I think their recent moves to put huge bets on their foundry business is taking the company in the right direction, but their success is not guaranteed. TSM building significant foundry capabilities in the U.S. is the next best thing.
Great news for National Security - "TSMC Arizona achieves production yields similar to those at its fabs in Taiwan" TSMC's Fab 21 near Phoenix, Arizona began trial production in April 2024 using 4nm-class process technology. Production yields are now on par with those from TSMC's Tainan facility in southern Taiwan, according to Bloomberg. Yield rate is a crucial factor in profitability - which TSMC is investing $65B in the Arizona campus (TSMC will receive $6.6 billion in grants and up to $5 billion in loans from the US government). Last year I took my family to the Grand Canyon. As you drive from Phoenix through Scottsdale to the open desert, north on the 17, it is impossible to miss this monstrosity. Here is the address -> 5088 W Innovation Cir, Phoenix, AZ 85083. Put it in Google maps to see how big this place is. Over a mile by a mile square. I’m excited to witness the growth of advanced manufacturing right here in America, and I'm thrilled to see TSMC's Arizona plant achieving production yields on par with their Taiwan facilities. This is a huge win for national security and U.S. tech innovation. Article on Tom's Hardware is here -> https://lnkd.in/e672fPa5 #AIArmy

🌟 TSMC Achieves Breakthrough in US Manufacturing with Arizona Factory! TSMC’s first fab in Arizona has reached an important milestone, achieving initial production yields—significantly improving upon similar facilities in Taiwan. This success marks a big step forward for TSMC’s U.S. expansion, which previously faced delays and labor issues. Rick Cassidy, President of TSMC U.S., shared that the Phoenix factory’s chip yield is already outperforming benchmarks, emphasizing the fab’s robust capabilities. Yield is a critical measure in the semiconductor industry, impacting the economic feasibility of these high-cost facilities. This progress supports the U.S. government's efforts to revitalize domestic semiconductor manufacturing. TSMC, a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, expects to receive $6.6 billion in grants, $5 billion in loans, and a 25% tax credit under the CHIPS Act to establish three fabs in Arizona. Despite setbacks, TSMC's momentum continues, and their Arizona plant is projected to begin mass production in early 2025, providing U.S.-based manufacturing with the same reliability as Taiwan. #TSMC #Semiconductors #Manufacturing #Arizona #CHIPSAct #Innovation
