Tuscany has no shortage of incredible places to visit, but oddly enough Volterra doesn't usually make it to the top of the list. It might be because of its remote location, the difficulty to arrive there by public transportation, or just the fact that it is surrounded by a few must see historic cities that rank higher on most people's bucket list. When the chance presented itself for me to spend a day or two in this ancient Etruscan city, I didn't expect much in the way of contemporary culture, but I was obviously wrong. The Faro de Cabezas de San Juan is a historic lighthouse located in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, at the northeastern tip of the island. It is part of the Reserva Natural Cabezas de San Juan, a nature reserve managed by the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico (Para la Naturaleza).
Key Facts About Faro de Cabezas de San Juan:
•Historical Significance:
Built in 1880 by the Spanish colonial government, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Puerto Rico.
The lighthouse was designed to guide ships through the hazardous passages of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, particularly around the reefs near Fajardo.
It played a crucial role in maritime navigation during a time when Puerto Rico was a critical hub for trade routes.
•Architecture:
The structure is built in a neoclassical style, with its walls made of masonry and coral stones, showcasing Spanish engineering of the 19th century.
It has a rectangular shape with a cylindrical tower, and the lantern is visible from several miles offshore.
Its original Fresnel lens is still operational, which is rare for lighthouses of its age.
•Current Use:
The lighthouse is no longer used for traditional maritime navigation but has been preserved as a historical and educational site.
It houses a small interpretive museum that offers information about the lighthouse, its history, and the surrounding nature reserve.

The Salton Sea: The Salton Sea, nestled within California's Coachella Valley, holds a fascinating history and intriguing anecdotes that add depth to its allure. Initially formed in the early 20th century by an engineering mishap, the Salton Sea was created when the Colorado River breached its banks and flooded the desert basin. Despite its accidental origins, the Salton Sea quickly became a popular tourist destination in the 1950s and 1960s, attracting visitors with its recreational opportunities and abundant wildlife.
However, over time, environmental issues such as agricultural runoff and diminishing water levels led to ecological challenges for the Salton Sea. As a result, many of the once-thriving resorts and communities around the lake fell into decline, giving the area an eerie, post-apocalyptic ambiance.

The Cord House is recognized as the first stone residence in America, likely constructed in the early 16th century. Notably, it features a distinctive dual-roof design, with its name derived from the decorative cord adorning the façade, which symbolizes the Franciscan Order.
Initially, the house served as the residence of Francisco de Garay, the governor of Jamaica and a notable participant in the conquest of Mexico. In 1509, it became the home of Diego Columbus (Christopher Columbus' son) and his wife before they relocated to their official residence; two of their daughters, Felipa and María, were born there. Subsequently, the building also functioned as the headquarters of the Royal Audience, among other purposes.
The building’s rich historical narrative includes its role as the Casa de la Balanza (House of Scales), where Sir Francis Drake weighed his valuable possessions.
Architecturally, the Cord House is characterized by its two courtyards and exhibits elements of Isabelline Gothic and Mudejar styles. The interior bears a resemblance to a Castilian palace, and prominently displayed at the apex of the façade is the coat of arms of Francisco Garay.

3. Oslo City Hall. The construction of this towering red-brick edifice (pictured on the photo) in the vicinity of Aker Brygge was completed in 1950, and it immediately became the city's landmark. The walls of the city hall feature prominent Norwegian art, which depicts the country's history, culture, mythology, and work life. There is no entrance fee.
4. Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park. This sculpture park is an installation in the affluent neighborhood of Tjuvholmen. The park is located just next to Astrup Fearnley Museum and it was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.
5. Stortinget. Generally, the Norwegian parliament is not accessible to the public. However, there are free guided tours that take place on Saturday (you can look up the dates and information on the website of Stortinget). Bear in mind that you cannot pre-book this guided tour, just show up at the agreed time.
