Porto’s Secrets Revealed 🔎 #32 After visiting the Casa do Infante Museum, we suggest you visit one of Porto’s most beautiful buildings: the Palácio da Bolsa. 😉 So, at the top of the Alfândega Street (“Rua da Alfândega”), you’ll find a large plaza known as Infante Dom Henrique Square (“Praça do Infante Dom Henrique”) and this is where the Palácio da Bolsa is located. It’s easy to recognize it because it’s a large neoclassical building. 🏛️ Despite being called Palace (“Palácio”), the truth is that no kings or queens lived here. This building was built to house the Porto Commercial Association (“Associação Comercial do Porto”), whose mission is to represent Porto’s business community on a national and international level. It’s one of the oldest business associations in Portugal! 😯 The construction of the Palácio da Bolsa began on October 6, 1842 and was only completed in 1909, on the occasion of the visit of the last Portuguese King, Manuel II. 👑 Inside, you’ll be amazed by the decorations of the different rooms, especially the Arab Salon (“Salão Árabe”). 😍 But did you know that Gustave Eiffel had his office here? It’s true and you can visit it! 😀 It was in this office that he designed one of his masterpieces in the city of Porto, the famous Maria Pia bridge. 😯 Join me for an unique archeology-based guided tour about Porto's history to learn the full story about the Palácio da Bolsa and so much more. 📩 #portugal #oporto #porto #visitportugal #visitporto #palaciodabolsa #palaciodabolsaporto #history #archaeology #architecture #guidedtours #tourism

Tuscany has no shortage of incredible places to visit, but oddly enough Volterra doesn't usually make it to the top of the list. It might be because of its remote location, the difficulty to arrive there by public transportation, or just the fact that it is surrounded by a few must see historic cities that rank higher on most people's bucket list. When the chance presented itself for me to spend a day or two in this ancient Etruscan city, I didn't expect much in the way of contemporary culture, but I was obviously wrong. Here is my Substack overview on Volterra.
Volterra's long shadow. The Tuscan hill town that casts its singular history into the present.

🏙️ Placemaking is undoubtedly a delicate art that can potentially have a transformative local impact by fostering vibrancy and contributing to an inclusive and connected community. From a tourism perspective, placemaking actions may increase tourist attachment to a place and potentially generate return visitation. Inevitably, the process of transforming places will demand disruption and rethinking of existing places, which can sometimes prove contentious. ✅ This article outlines Rome’s new project to create a pedestrian-friendly, archaeological area downtown. The project aims to create a pedestrian-friendly public space to promote Rome’s ancient past, including installing bike and walking paths, rearranging public transport, and constructing terraces to better appreciate the areas. The project will also link with other historical sites, facilitating the development of an archaeological walk. The project is hoped to inspire residents to stroll and meet with others, potentially igniting a deeper relationship with their city. ❌ However, the article states that some critics fear that the project only seeks to appease tourists and may potentially become “an amusement park for tourists.” Others also fear that shifting traffic from the neighbourhood will increase traffic in other localities.

Saudi Arabia Beyond the Stereotype: Exploring the Extraordinary Rocky Landscapes 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia, often depicted through the lens of vast deserts and urban landscapes, harbors a hidden treasure in its rocky terrains that rival the iconic Monument Valley of the USA. While the latter is renowned globally for its towering sandstone pillars and mesas, Saudi Arabia's rocky landscapes offer a distinct and equally mesmerizing experience. Monument Valley: Iconic Landscapes of the USA Monument Valley, located within the Navajo Nation Reservation on the Arizona-Utah border, is celebrated for its dramatic sandstone buttes that rise hundreds of feet above the desert floor. These iconic formations have appeared in numerous movies, shaping the world's perception of the American West. Visitors are awed by the stark beauty of the desert punctuated by towering structures that seem to defy gravity. Saudi Arabia's Hidden Gem: Rocky Wonders Contrary to popular belief, Saudi Arabia boasts a diverse topography beyond its deserts. The rocky landscapes, particularly in regions like Al Ula and the Hejaz Mountains, showcase towering cliffs, ancient rock formations, and valleys carved over millennia by wind and water. These areas hold archaeological sites, such as Madain Saleh, a UNESCO World Heritage site akin to Petra in Jordan, underscoring Saudi Arabia's rich historical and cultural heritage. Contrasting Features and Unique Appeal While Monument Valley's buttes stand prominently against a backdrop of arid plains, Saudi Arabia's rocky formations blend ancient history with geological wonders. The reddish hues of sandstone in both locales create a striking visual contrast against blue skies, attracting photographers and adventurers alike. Each destination offers a glimpse into unique ecosystems shaped by their respective climates and histories. Cultural and Historical Significance Beyond natural beauty, both locations hold immense cultural and historical significance. Monument Valley is integral to Navajo culture, with the buttes considered sacred landmarks. In Saudi Arabia, ancient civilizations left their mark through rock art and inscriptions, reflecting a deep connection between humanity and the landscape across millennia.
