2024 is the year of the election and we at CivicPulse wanted to know about recent uncontested local US elections. Our survey in partnership with Professor Curtis Bram at the University of Texas at Dallas asked local officials about the competitiveness of their most recent election, most of which occurred in 2022. We were able to compare results to a prior survey we conducted on uncontested elections in 2018 as well as external sources for state legislature and congressional elections. For those findings check out: https://lnkd.in/eB95dzvC Survey respondents also expanded understanding of local election competitiveness in their communities through open-ended responses. BallotReady’s (HGL 1) analysis of the last 4 general elections (November 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023) found that nearly 70% of the positions on the ballot went uncontested, leaving voters with little to no choice at the ballot box. This issue is especially prevalent in rural areas, where many local races are entirely unopposed, and where Democrats failed to field a candidate in over 50% of partisan offices during the 2022 midterms. BallotReady is bringing attention to this gap and helping to ensure voters can make meaningful decisions in every election, at every level. Read more about their research in The New York Times below and learn how this issue is impacting elections nationwide.

Did you know? Turnout in US local government elections is startlingly low, often less than 20%, and voters are unrepresentative of the electorate overall. Most local elections are held off-cycle. Changing local election times to coincide with higher-profile federal and state elections would generate dramatic increases in turnout and a more representative set of voters. Watch highlights from our Democracy Reform Primer on The Timing of Local Elections by Professor Christopher Berry from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago and the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, University of Chicago. #democracy #reform #primers #elections

#Mexico’s 2024 elections were some of the most violent in recent history, with most of this violence felt at the local level. Of the 216 violent incidents where candidates or their relatives or supporters were targeted, over 80% targeted political figures running for local office, including for mayor and municipal council seats. #Veracruz state — which didn’t hold local elections in June — is a noteworthy example of how local elections can drive violence. During the last municipal elections in 2021, Veracruz was the state with the highest level of violence targeting political figures, with 57 events recorded in the six months leading up to the vote and the two weeks that followed. This time, however, ACLED records about a quarter of the 2021 figure — 17 events — in Veracruz, dropping the state to 10th in the ranking, underlining how the absence of municipal elections may correlate with reduced violence. Early voting and mail-in ballots have contributed significantly to this trend, allowing more citizens to cast their votes conveniently. “In most cases, the majority of voters don’t decide elections – rather, the tiny sliver of voters who participate in party primaries do. The voters who engage in these low-turnout affairs are unrepresentative of the electorate as a whole, yet they hold the keys to most politicians’ reelection. Politicians often risk being “primaried” by these voters should they dare work across the aisle.” Unite America Executive Director @NickTroiano’s op-ed for US News and World Report States with open, all-candidate primaries have seen more competitive elections, more meaningful voter participation, and decreased polarization. https://bit.ly/48B8lC6

Do you know who is in charge of elections in SLO County? Or that it differs from who's in charge in other states? Here in California, the County Clerk-Recorder also serves as the Registrar of Voters and conducts elections for all Federal, State and County offices, as well as for school boards, special districts, and community service districts. City Clerks in each of the 7 local cities run elections for their city contests -- though those contests are generally combined with the others onto a single ballot that's printed and counted by the Clerk-Recorder in the Elections Office. If you're interested in digging into the specifics of local elections and how they vary from state to state, the United States Election Assistance Commission provides useful resources on their website at eac.gov/vote. And of course, you can always find in-depth information about our elections here at home on the SLO County Clerk-Recorder's website at https://lnkd.in/gESP3J7i.
