As a pharmacy professor… Pharmacy school applicants often underestimate the amount of time, energy organization, support, and effort that pharmacy school requires. Some even think that they will be able to carry on with their current job while studying. These students tend to struggle when the demands of the PharmD kick in. Before considering applying to pharmacy school, think if this is the most appropriate moment in your life to start such an endeavor. Are you prepared to focus on this goal? Have you researched all the resources you will need to support you during the next 4 years? Does the school you’re applying to provide the flexibility and support that you need? Not all schools will be a fit for you! Do your research and only commit to a PharmD when you are 100% certain that you want to become a pharmacist. When the road gets tough, your commitment to that goal will carry you through.

5 Lessons Student Pharmacists Learn LATE‼️ 1️⃣ Build a relationship with faculty The faculty at your school have a well established network. They can be a great resource and guide in teaching you how to build and your own network. 2️⃣ Leveraging Social Media Use your platform to showcase your journey as a student. Social Media can be a powerful tool in helping you find mentors, communities, and like minded people. It is grossly underutilized as a tool to building a strong professional network 3️⃣The PharmD can be MORE Don’t only look at community, industry, or health system as the only paths. There are plenty of opportunities out there and areas you can venture out into with your PharmD and excel 4️⃣Your creativity and the PharmD can coexist Don’t dull your creativity because of some idea you have been presented with about what a pharmacist is. There are plenty of examples of pharmacists leaning into their creativity to design programs that improve patient outcome. Exhibit A➡️🙋🏾♀️ 5️⃣ Getting an A on a rotation does not guarantee a stellar Letter of Recommendation 😩😩😩 I know, this sounds crazy right? But it is absolutely true. Your references are asked to speak to more than just your academic performance or aptitude. If your preceptor doesn’t know you well, or worst, thought you were a “know it all” or unprofessional and lacked tact. You can see how things can go left very quickly. Do your best to build genuine relationships with preceptors. This will go a long way‼️ In working with students, I have found these to be the most common challenges What did I miss? What has been your experience with what you wish students learned early? Please share and help enlighten a next generation ⤵️🤗 Thanks, -Saley 🖤🙋🏾♀️
