The results are in from the Sixth Allocation Round (AR6) of the UK Government's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme. A record number of low carbon electricity generation projects received CfDs across emerging and mature technologies. With no offshore wind project bids in the previous allocation round, notably AR6 has seen a rebound in this sector. Six offshore wind projects (fixed foundations) secured almost 5GW of capacity and there was a 400MW capacity award for a commercial scale floating wind project to deliver electrification to Scottish North Sea oil and gas platforms. Onshore wind projects also received allocations and this sector is seeing renewed focus in the new Government’s net zero plans. With the Government's ambitious 2030 goals in the balance, the focus now shifts to next year’s Seventh Allocation Round (AR7) and how that will play out. Last week The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a 50% budget boost 📈 for the upcoming Contracts for Difference (#CfD) Allocation Round 6 (#AR6). Fixed-bottom offshore wind is now allocated £1.1bn, and if the entire budget is used with projects bidding at the maximum strike price, then we could see 4.2GW of fixed-bottom wind and 362MW ⚡ of floating wind projects being awarded. 🏆 ✅ Welcome news for the wind industry, but still a long way to go to meet the 2030 target of 60GW of fixed-bottom wind and 5GW of floating wind, especially in view of the lack of capacity awarded in #AR5. Hopefully awarded projects will boost confidence within (and demand on) the UK supply chain, encourage further research and #innovation, and generate lots of new #IP. #intellectualproperty #patents #energy #offshorewind

The #UK government commits £800 million to #offshorewind in #CfD AR6, so... place your bets ! There should be up to ~15 GW of eligible capacity in the #auction (including ~1.5 GW as AR4 project rebids) But the government should not forget that it needs to continue to address challenges in planning, grid connections, seabed licencing and supply chains !!! to deliver the required capacity to reach the UK’s offshore wind target of 50GW (and 5GW of floating offshore) wind by 2030. https://lnkd.in/ek3j964B https://lnkd.in/ehfYWuNK

ACP’s recent report also outlines USD 65 billion (approximately EUR 60 billion) in investments and 56,000 jobs in the US offshore wind sector by 2030. According to ACP, market analysts forecast that there will be 14 GW of offshore wind capacity deployed by 2030, 30 GW by 2033, and 40 GW online by 2035. There are currently 12 GW of projects with active offtake agreements, including 4 GW under active construction at Vineyard Wind, Revolution Wind, and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, said ACP in its 2024 Offshore Wind Market Report. Boasting the second-largest offshore wind industry worldwide, with wind turbines powering over 7.5 million homes (UK Research and Innovation), the UK has firmly secured its position as a global leader in the offshore wind industry, harnessing the power of wind to generate clean energy. As this industry continues to evolve, the establishment and adherence to technical standards will remain vital in navigating the challenges and disruptions that arise. We're excited to announce that BSI has been nominated as a UK Chairperson for the international wind energy technical committee IEC/TC 88, with Jonathan Hughes from OREC representing us starting from May 2024. This nomination is a testament to our long-standing role in shaping international standards and presents a topical opportunity to ensure wind energy standards reflect the UK's innovative expertise in this space. Delve into our latest blog to explore the rise of the UK's offshore wind industry, its objectives, and the pivotal role technical standards play in its success.
