The Global South is rising, Roxanne Escobales writes in the intro of the latest edition of Chatham House’s international affairs magazine The World Today ✍️ “Many geopolitical events have led to this moment, including most recently the number of abstentions in 2022’s United Nations vote against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and the International Court of Justice case of genocide brought by South Africa against the mighty Western ally, Israel, for its assault on Gaza.” In our latest View newsletter, we explore the recent developments that both reflect and add momentum to a transformation of the current world order 🌐 https://lnkd.in/gdFDEhqU #WorldWise #GlobalDev #newsletter #GlobalSouth #geopolitics #internationalrelations

#CWTEE - 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲? 🛡️ Here is what Dr. Jan Hoffenaar says: “The Cold War holds up a mirror to us of where and why international relations could have been so tense for so long; how enemy images could lead to distortion of each other's intentions; where opportunities for improvement in relations were missed etc. With the underlying hope that we can learn something from this for our judgements and actions now.” If you want to read Dr. Hoffenaar’s full answer, visit our website https://lnkd.in/dP5nFsqA

📖 In the current KOFF à propos, Michal Baumannn (swisspeace) discusses the indispensable role of young people for sustainable peace and their involvement in peace processes. 💡Past peace processes show that young people are rarely included as active partners in peace negotiations and are often mentioned only marginally, if at all, in peace agreements. Yet, there are positive examples. Read the article here (DE/FR/EN) 👇 https://lnkd.in/dXXHpZ64

#War on #Peace: A Modern #Legacy by Michael Proulx Peace is a construct that results from a concerted effort involving peacemaking, peace keeping and peace building. This categorization generates theoretical and empirical analyses of peace in order to better understand its conditionality, and more importantly, to replicate it when needed. Confusion about the modern enterprise of peace, and war, is examined here. This paper argues there is a permanent global war being prosecuted against peace through a review of the cost(s) of conflict literature. I conclude by identifying opportunities to install liberal market institutions and risk management techniques to the contexts of conflict – for mitigation and/or prevention. The goal is not to assess the cost(s) of conflict per se but question why war is so prolific that it overwhelms the rationale for peace, especially economic rationale. https://lnkd.in/eg8sfv7T

I write for the May issue of Peace Policy published by Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame: With growing levels of urbanization and blurring of civilian and non-civilian boundaries, cities have become the epicenter of violence, resulting in the shelling of social, economic, physical, and cultural infrastructure, as well as the near complete destruction of neighborhoods. However, after war, the big question that lingers and can delay the transition to peace and reconciliation is that of reconstruction. Reconstruction can open Pandora’s box as new conflicts develop over what to rebuild and when. Jenna Sapiano Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ezrJSSJg
In the May issue of Peace Policy, our authors reflect on the consequences of urban war on the city’s people and built environment. Each essay emphasizes the “magical” and everyday spaces destroyed when cities are targeted in armed conflict, and how this impacts the possibility of reconstruction and peace. Revisiting Andrew A. Michta in current issue Foreign Policy Research Institute #Orbis: What does a new administration have to face? "This era will be defined by protracted systemic instability across the globe, where success or failure to maintain regional power balances in key theaters will determine whether we can keep the peace, or if we will be pulled into another system-transforming world war. We need a strategy articulated in plain language that the citizens can embrace—one that focuses on America’s irreducible national interests, on geopolitics, the economy, the key theaters we must secure, and the force posture we need to build to deter and, if need be, defeat our enemies." https://lnkd.in/gD5pW8rR
