Probably one of the most exciting and holistic approach re regeneration !!! The BioFi Project (BioFi for BIOregional FInance for Planetary Regeneration) is a collective supporting bioregions to design, build, and implement Bioregional Financing Facilities (BFFs) that connect financial resources and regenerators. In other words, connecting the flows of capital to the flows of life. Their goal is to ensure that every bioregion on Earth gets a BFF to support its transition to a regenerative economy – so that finance can serve life. BFFs - true decentralized autonomous organizations aka DAOs - drive the decentralisation of financial resource governance, the design of project portfolios for systemic change, and the transition to a regenerative economy at the bioregional scale. A BFF is based on 4 elements : - a Bioregional Trust acting is a catalytic grant fund that raises philanthropic and public grant capital as well as receive individual donations (including crowdfunding) - a Bioregional Venture Studio is a public benefit corporation, co-operative, steward-owned entity that supports the development of a cohort of synergistic regeneration Initiatives by investing in and incubating cohorts of early-stage organizations that work together to change a specific system - a Bioregional Investment Company is a public benefit corporation, co-operative, steward-owned entity that develops a portfolio of Systemic Investment Funds and Bioregional Regeneration Bonds. - a Bioregional Bank provides low-interest loans, microloans, lines of credit, and technical assistance to aligned organizations. It can also provide retail banking services to individuals and can develop and issue a complementary or nature-based currency Want to know more ? https://lnkd.in/eq4GuPMs The BioFi Project also published a free e-book, "Bioregional Financing Facilities: Reimagining Finance to Regenerate Our Planet" that lays out the rationale behind this approach and related templates. A must read !

Fabulous to read the exec summary of this report 'In this critical moment, the authors propose a new layer in the global financial architecture through the creation of Bioregional Financing Facilities to serve every bioregion on Earth. Bioregional Financing Facilities can drive the decentralization of financial resource governance, the design of project portfolios for systemic change, and the transition to a regenerative economy. They have the potential to become the connective tissue between financial resources and on-the-ground regenerators. They can do this by enabling strategic, integrated capital raised from a variety of sources to flow to aggregated portfolios of systemically coordinated and supported regenerative projects on the ground. In return, regeneration benefits can flow back to investors in a community-determined, non-extractive way. We believe this infrastructure is needed to put finance in service to life and Indigenous wisdom.'
To our knowledge, the nexus of bioregional regeneration and the financial world has not been explored structurally to this date. A new book about #BioregionalFinancingFacilities, that we have co-authored with The BioFi Project and Buckminster Fuller Institute, now sheds light on this intersection and illuminates numerous pioneering efforts that are already underway around the world. »Bioregional Financing Facilities (BFFs) are a new layer in the global financial architecture that can drive the decentralisation of financial resource governance, the design of project portfolios for systemic change, and the transition to a regenerative economy at the bioregional scale. It… – makes the case for why novel approaches to financing bioregional transformation are needed, – describes the enabling environment required for Bioregional Financing Facilities to serve their intended purpose, – provides a series of templates for four types of BFFs (the Bioregional Trust, the Bioregional Venture Studio, the Bioregional Investment Company, and the Bioregional Bank), – explores BFF governance and capital allocation, – highlights additional innovative approaches for financing bioregional regeneration, – features a series of practical case studies across the mentioned topics, and – ends on a comprehensive list of calls to action, inviting various stakeholder groups to engage in advancing the field. There is deep need for a transformation in the ways that we organize financial capital in service to the regeneration of bioregions. I have participated in the weaving of real-world contexts to make this possible and see that we still have a long way to go. Watch this space of bioregional funding ecosystems to see how you can help create the transformation pathways that humanity needs.

On this summer Solstice and Strawberry Moon, I could not be more excited to share the launch of the book 'Bioregional Financing Facilities: Reimagining Finance to Regenerate Our Planet' that I have been working on for the past 9 months with my amazing co-author Leon Seefeld of Dark Matter Labs and incredible support from Tyler Wakefield, Nick Paul, and our team of advisors (tagged in comments). In this publication, we make the case for a new layer in the global financial architecture of Bioregional Financing Facilities (BFFs) to serve every bioregion on Earth. BFFs are a new type of financial institution that has 3 objectives: drive the decentralization of financial resource governance, catalyze the design of project portfolios for systemic change, and support the transition to a regenerative economy. BFFs have 12 attributes, the first of which is that they aim to align financial flows with living systems principles and Indigenous wisdom. We believe BFFs can become the connective tissue between increasingly concentrated pools of financial resources, locked in the extractive economy, and the mycelial web of regenerative projects and organizations around the world. BFFs can enable integrated capital raised from a variety of sources to flow to aggregated portfolios of systemically coordinated regenerative projects in bioregions. Through BFFs, we believe we can put finance in service to life. Today, my incredible co-founder Edward West and I are also launching the The BioFi Project with our epic team (see comments). The BioFi Project is a collective dedicated to supporting bioregional organizing teams around the world to turn the recommendations in the book into action through designing, building, and implementing BFFs. Next steps: If you are a bioregion that believes your place is ready for a BFF and wants our support, please fill out the expression of interest form on our website. If you would like to learn more about BFFs and engage in peer-to-peer learning and collaboration, sign up for the BioFi Community of Practice on Hylo. It will be stewarded by Tyler Wakefield. You can also sign up for our newsletter. BFFs were born out of and aim to support the web of interdependent efforts of the broader bioregional and regenerative movement, which is decentralized, fractal, and emergent. This effort took a village and will in its next stage too! I could not be more grateful for the overwhelming support I have received (acknowledgements in comments). We believe that everyone has a role to play in catalyzing bioregional regeneration and hope that you will join us on this journey. Read the e-book and learn more at: www.biofi.earth (paperback and Kindle versions will be available for purchase next week). 🌳 ☀ At Regen Labs we’re catalysing a shift towards regenerative finance. So, what is it? To put it simply: regenerative finance, commonly known as ReFi in the industry, creates real value across multiple forms of capital - ecological, economic, social, cultural. 🌻 Think of nutrients in a system, continuing to flow through that same system, rather than being extracted. Think of terms that are reciprocal in nature and responsive to the ecological, social, cultural, and economic needs of places. Think of finance as being in service to communities and the planet, rather than its growth as the primary outcome. ReFi is about making long-term investments that benefit everyone, such as investing in things like community-owned renewable energy, local regenerative food systems, and artists stewarding community & ecological health! A great explanation is one shared by Samantha Power and Leon Seefeld from the The BioFi Project. In their book 'Bioregional Financing Facilities,' they describe that adopting this holistic, reciprocal approach to value generation might involve: ❤️ Treating growth and returns as a means, not an end 🤝 Involving stakeholders in decision-making about capital flows 💰 Raising funds from and with mission-aligned investors/funders We need a new approach to finance that is not extractive but generative. Another example that we love is Wedgetail with their 'Nature-linked loans' in which interest rates are decreased based on meeting contribution targets. This approach rewards impact over profit. What do you think about these elements of regenerative finance? How do you see these principles agitating our current financial system? What principles do you think are critical to evolving finance to being regenerative? Add your thoughts in the comments below! --- Regen Labs is growing a community of investors and philanthropists who are eager to learn alongside us and the place-based regenerative enterprises we support. If you're interested in learning more and joining the community, sign-up to our newsletter - link in the comments below.
