Rethinking HVAC with Phononic's #TTAP Platform: Our TTAP (Terminal Treatment of Air with Peltier) offers an HVAC solution that provides fully demand- based cooling and heating without the need for refrigerants or a hydronic network. At that level of contribution, to make a meaningful impact the building sector must 'go to the source', according to Tony Atti, Ph.D. and Phononic CEO. "It is really a unique, multi-faceted problem, but it must be taken on if we're going to seriously address carbon emissions," according to Atti. At Phononic we believe TTAP could be a transformative part of the solution. Read more in Forbes: https://lnkd.in/eVH2MZH6 The TTAP is a modular solid state platform that can be integrated into existing building retrofits or as a feature in new build construction. It enables the use of only partially treated air ventilated throughout the building, and cools or heats specific to the occupants’ settings. This new approach delivers superior operating efficiency and costs, seamless installation and unparalleled end-user health and comfort benefits.

With a winter season of operation under our belts, we were able to get a glimpse of the extraordinary thermal efficiencies that we will achieve once the retrofit is complete. In January 2024 we had a few cold days in the teens. The ambient loop (aka the condenser water riser) was able to provide thermally rich source water to the Energy Machines™ heat pumps that then produced the hot water for the perimeter radiation. All of this was done with excess heat that would otherwise be exhausted by the cooling towers for “free cooling”. We delivered carbon free heating from energy that was already spent all while hitting incredibly high COPs. This is the future of HVAC system design … and this is only scratching the surface of what could be done. Whether it is a distributed heat pump design or a central utility plant, this solution can scale while delivering nearly untouchable efficiencies and providing flexibility for adaptive reuse. Decarbonizing domestic hot water is also possible by using the Energy Machines™ heat pumps that can hit 150F while also simultaneously producing chilled water. This trailblazing project would not be possible without the thorough, insightful and tireless work of Benjamin Rodney who was featured in this article! Many thanks to the entire Hines, Energy Machines™, Consigli Construction Co., Inc., urbs | Urban Systems and AXC Automation teams that contributed to this project becoming a reality. There are even more groundbreaking aspects of this project on the horizon as the next phases reach construction! https://lnkd.in/gJQKjTUU

Resource Efficient Electrification Re-Mixed "Reduce > Recover > Replace" (NYSERDA) makes a ton of sense from a retrofit optimization perspective. This sequencing allows for smaller heat pump sizing. You’re welcome, capital budget! 💰 Except… capital planning, in my experience, rarely fits that sequence. We can’t just ignore remaining useful life. ⏳ What if your boiler needs to be replaced now, your brand new air handler doesn’t have heat recovery, and your windows are good for another decade? Don’t fret; just shuffle things a bit. 🔄 First, simulate the load impact of heat recovery and high-performance glazing, even if these retrofits will take place far down the road. Next, evaluate a heat pump retrofit now… but sized for the projected future load. This means you will still need a backup heating source; that’s okay! The heat pump will probably still do the majority of the heating. When the time comes for the heat recovery and high-performance glazing retrofits, if you played your cards right, you’ll likely be able to retire the backup heating source. Consider that the smart folks at the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building standard require no site-combustion for OAT ≥ -15°C. 🚫🔥 And what about the chiller? Here are some high-level options: - If the chiller is also at the end of its useful life: -- For air-cooled chillers, consider a smaller air-cooled chiller. -- For water-cooled chillers, consider: --- An air-source boiler (a.k.a., heating-only air-source heat pump), and --- A separate measure for the chiller (perhaps an oil-free chiller). - If the chiller has considerable remaining useful life, consider an air-source boiler and a separate measure for the chiller down the road. This is not design advice ⚠️. Make sure to reach out to your friendly neighbourhood HVAC engineer for specific design considerations. #decarbonization #heatpumps #electrification #buildingretrofit #REE Building Decarbonization Coalition The Transition Accelerator/ L’Accélérateur de transition B2E - Building to Electrification Coalition
