Traditionally, render has been the most popular ICF finish, as it helps keep overall wall thickness down and is towards the more economic end of the scale. However, in more recent years there's been an increasing amount of timber cladding coming through on many of our self-build and even commercial projects. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues...

Judges' Citation: Sort Trae: Designed to Passivhaus standards, the buildings not only respect their setting but have a minimal impact on it. The ultra-low energy approach uses the thermal mass of the concrete retaining walls and south facing triple-glazed walls to manage internal temperatures and create a comfortable, highly efficient environment. Accessed at the upper level, the two-storey house straddles the level changes across the steeply sloping site. The other element, the single-storey studio space, is nestled into the landscape. Both of these buildings have full height triple-glazed windows facing out over the countryside to exploit the amazing setting while also preserving neighbours’ views across the idyllic surroundings. The main house is designed around a central dry-stone wall with the staircase on one side and housing storage on the other, keeping rooms simple and uncluttered. At the upper, entrance level, either side of the stair sit the two bedrooms with panoramic views. This allows level access to the bedrooms should that be needed in the future. The design is very formal, axially balanced or over the corner, proportionate to the surrounding elements (foreground, facade, sightly of super-sized scale. These are applique embellishments, so often outrageous or overdone in details. These elements not only define the entry point but are brand mark of the building. The door stands out with distinction over the street.

DEF_Studio/ Materials - Cedar Cladding We’re constantly looking for new and unique ways to use natural materials. From our Scandinavian influence, timber cladding has played a large role in our earlier schemes. Not only highly sustainable when used correctly but also provides the ability to connect the building to natural landscapes. Here is a glimpse of several projects using cedar cladding in different methods. 1. Farmstead House: 92mm cedar open joint cladding with a natural and UV stain to create a slightly ‘silvered’ effect. This photo also shows the combination with oak linings and cedar shingled roof. 2. Blue Hayes: An alternative method using 125mm Tongue and Groove jointed planks. Coupled into groups of three, a 25mm gap has then been introduced to create the effect of large format panels being used on the facades. Slightly unorthodox however creates a striking panelled appearance. 3. The Orchard: 50mm wide planks with a shadow gap introduced at low level to create a ‘plinth’ for the building whilst utilising standard lengths of timber. 4: Feature Window Reveals and Insets: 5. Cedar soffits returning from cladding: A clever drip was added to the corner allowing water to run off and prevent tracking back onto the soffit planks.
