Pinstone | B Corp ’s Post

This National Composting Week, we're highlighting the benefits of home composting and how even the smallest of contributions can make a big combined difference in tackling one of the biggest environmental challenges in the UK and globally: peat. Peatlands play an important role in terms of carbon storage, biodiversity and water regulation. Covering only 3% of the global land surface, they store a staggering 30% of the world's soil carbon - twice as much as all the world's forests combined! Yet, in the UK, peatlands have been degraded, with one of the major contributors to degradation being peat extraction for horticultural use.  Although the issues surrounding peat extraction and degradation are complex, we feel passionately that every effort to manage or restore peatland, however big or small, will contribute towards making a difference in the context of climate change, conservation, and sustainable land use. For Pinstone, this means putting our bokashi composting bin to good use, turning our food scraps, including meat, bones, fish and dairy, and coffee grounds (of which there are many!) into nutrient rich compost, which will be used by the green fingered members of the team to feed their home-grown veggies. Here’s where home (or office) composting can make a tangible difference: 🌼 Sustainable gardening: By composting at home, you can create a peat-free alternative for your gardens, reducing the demand for peat-based products. This not only preserves our precious peatlands but also reduces carbon emissions. 📉 Reducing waste: Composting organic waste at home means less material heading to the landfill where it would decompose anaerobically, producing methane, a notorious greenhouse gas. 🔄 Circular economy: Home composting is a perfect example of a circular economy, turning waste into resource for your garden. Together, we can protect our peatlands, fight climate change, and foster a healthier planet for future generations. #NationalCompostingWeek #SustainablePR #PeatFree #HomeComposting #Binfluencers #Bcorp
