This National Composting Week, we're highlighting the benefits of home composting and how even the smallest of contributions can make a big combined difference in tackling one of the biggest environmental challenges in the UK and globally: peat. Peatlands play an important role in terms of carbon storage, biodiversity and water regulation. Covering only 3% of the global land surface, they store a staggering 30% of the world's soil carbon - twice as much as all the world's forests combined! Yet, in the UK, peatlands have been degraded, with one of the major contributors to degradation being peat extraction for horticultural use. Although the issues surrounding peat extraction and degradation are complex, we feel passionately that every effort to manage or restore peatland, however big or small, will contribute towards making a difference in the context of climate change, conservation, and sustainable land use. For Pinstone, this means putting our bokashi composting bin to good use, turning our food scraps, including meat, bones, fish and dairy, and coffee grounds (of which there are many!) into nutrient rich compost, which will be used by the green fingered members of the team to feed their home-grown veggies. Here’s where home (or office) composting can make a tangible difference: 🌼 Sustainable gardening: By composting at home, you can create a peat-free alternative for your gardens, reducing the demand for peat-based products. This not only preserves our precious peatlands but also reduces carbon emissions. 📉 Reducing waste: Composting organic waste at home means less material heading to the landfill where it would decompose anaerobically, producing methane, a notorious greenhouse gas. 🔄 Circular economy: Home composting is a perfect example of a circular economy, turning waste into resource for your garden. Together, we can protect our peatlands, fight climate change, and foster a healthier planet for future generations. #NationalCompostingWeek #SustainablePR #PeatFree #HomeComposting #Binfluencers #Bcorp

Day 4 of the ECO30 Sustainable living challenge is buying local produce and it's benefits. This is such an important challenge and this my pepper which I bought it in the market. Purchasing local produce can have a huge impact on the environment and the local economy. By supporting local farms, you're helping to: ~reduce the amount of energy and resources needed to transport food from faraway places. ~Plus, local farms often use more sustainable practices, such as organic farming, which reduces the amount of pesticides and other chemicals used on crops. ~This also helps to preserve local biodiversity and protect the health of the soil. Yeah🤗You're🫵🏾 making a difference in so many ways, simply by buying local produce! 👏 #ECO30Impact - my little step to saving mother Earth☺️🤭

🌍 The Way We Do Things 🌍 We have a vision to be a B Corp. So from Day 1, before we even had a name, the way we do things has been a No1 goal for us at HayDay. We knew that whatever we did, we wanted to do it the right way and for the right reason. Part of this vision includes our sustainability actions; 🌍 We use sustainable farming practices and are constantly improving and innovating the way we do things 🌍 We have invested in green energy including ground source heat pumps and solar panels 🌍 We are 100% plastic free, and use 100% recyclable or reusable materials - we even source our packaging less than 25 miles from our farm. 🌍 We have schemes to reintroduce hedgerows and wildflowers on the farm to encourage wildlife (the buzzzz in summer can be heard from afar!) and have beehives too - the resulting honey doesn't go unnoticed! 🌍 We print customer comms on recycled paper (arguably an expectation) and we encourage customers to reuse our packaging for enrichment with their pets (we have 'activity panels' on the packaging and work with ambassadors to create ideas for reusing). We don't love the word 'sustainability' - it can sound like a buzz word and be misleading - but in practice, in can be so powerful for businesses that can make improvements and make a difference. Thats why we want to have visible and measurable actions and commitments that we can share with our customers, such as the above. A goal for 2024 is to communicate our sustainability actions more - we include some of this information on pack but are working on adding more. Would be great to hear how others communicate theirs? #BCorp #environment #sustainability

How do you communicate the great things that you do? The way we do things at HayDay has always been a No1 Goal for us. With a big vision, we are doing what we can to do things the right way. We were definitely under-communicating some of the amazing things we do, so a goal for 2024 is to shout about this more. One way is to add it onto our packaging. I'd love to know: What do you communicate on pack? What other ways do you shout about the great things you do? ➡ HayDay | Barn Dried Premium Pet Hay #startup #sustainability #environment #productdevelopment #BCorp
