Are Digital Wardrobes a Passing Trend or the Future of Fashion?
By Dilcia Tineo
As AI-driven virtual dressing surges in popularity, major brands like Gucci, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Nike, alongside digital pioneers like DressX, are reshaping fashion for the digital era. From Gucci’s virtual sneakers to DressX’s innovative digital collections, these companies are at the forefront, meeting demand for sustainable, versatile style.
For us designers, this shift means new creative horizons without physical production limits—requiring skills in 3D modeling, AR/VR, and tools like Clo 3D and Blender. Some “Influencers” are also taking advantage of virtual fashion, experimenting with fresh looks daily without physical clutter or high costs. Virtual wardrobes even offer a unique edge on the dating apps arena—allowing users to update their profile looks quickly to keep things fresh and make a great first impression.
In particular I am most excited about being able to create visual presentations such as look books while still being at the product development stages, using samples photos and prototypes to be displayed as a finished product on professional models, not only cost effective but time efficient while being ahead of the game to attract customers excitement visually and commitments in sales.
However, after experimenting a bit most softwares in my opinion available in the market are not quite there yet, there are still challenges. Some AI-generated prompts don’t capture styles accurately, and digital garments may lack the hyper-realism needed to fully mirror fabric draping, texture of an actual garment but despite these growing pains, with a projected market value of $50 billion by 2030, digital fashion seems poised to become a core part of our wardrobes, offering exciting paths toward sustainable style and creative innovation.
To my Fashion piers: Would love to know your take in this subject, which apps, software you are using to upgrade your skills and work flow. Any tips and suggestions you would like to share that you are using to increase productivity and achieve a work-balance life are always welcome.
