At Strategies for Northern Development (SND), peace is more than just a word—it is a vital pillar of our mission. In the pastoralist communities we serve, peacebuilding and good governance are the foundations upon which sustainable livelihoods and resilience are built. Through our Peace Building and Governance pillar, we work tirelessly to strengthen community cohesion, resolve conflicts, and promote inclusive governance. Our initiatives have empowered local leaders, women, and youth to be active agents of peace, ensuring that disputes are settled peacefully and that communities can thrive together. On this International Day of Peace, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering peace in the Horn of Africa. Let’s continue to work hand-in-hand to create a future where harmony, understanding, and unity prevail. How EU is constantly violating human rights and has thrown basic humanity over board in the last years. This report is a must read!
In anticipation of #WorldRefugeeDay tomorrow, we are excited to launch our new report ‘Humanity Overboard’! The extensive report shows how the #EU is obstructing search and rescue in the #Mediterranean, and depriving refugees of their human rights. It analyses all of Humanity 1’s rescue operations between September 2022 and March 2024 in a legal and political framework, showing how human rights and basic humanity have been thrown overboard. We also showcase testimonies and feedback from survivors themselves, including a survey carried out on board shedding light on how and why people flee across the Mediterranean. Read the full analysis – and our demands to EU member states for a change of course: https://lnkd.in/ejjWBzk7

The International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21st, serves as a global reminder of our collective responsibility to promote harmony and resolve conflicts. Established by the UN in 1981, it calls for a 24-hour ceasefire, enabling humanitarian aid and offering a glimpse of what sustained peace might look like. A key focus of Peace Day is education. Schools and organizations worldwide teach children the importance of empathy, conflict resolution, and global citizenship, empowering the next generation to break cycles of violence. In recent years, attention has also shifted to "environmental peace," recognizing how climate change and resource scarcity can exacerbate conflicts, and how sustainable practices can foster global cooperation. While Peace Day is a global initiative, grassroots movements play a crucial role. Communities directly affected by violence often hold local events to foster dialogue and understanding, demonstrating that peace can be built from the ground up. Alongside these efforts, art, music, and culture serve as powerful tools in peacebuilding, bridging divides by showcasing shared human experiences. Youth are also at the forefront of these efforts, leading campaigns and shaping a future grounded in peace. Digital platforms amplify their voices, connecting activists globally and spreading awareness about peace initiatives. On a personal level, Peace Day encourages reflection and inner peace, acknowledging that global peace begins with individuals fostering harmony within themselves. This day, therefore, represents not just the cessation of violence but the pursuit of justice, equality, and human rights. Ultimately, the International Day of Peace is a call to action, urging us all to contribute—whether through education, environmental protection, activism, or personal reflection. Peace may seem challenging, but by working together, we can make it a lasting reality. #InternationalDayOfPeace #PeaceDay #GlobalUnity #CeasefireForPeace #PeaceEducation #YouthForPeace #EnvironmentalPeace #PeaceThroughAction #InnerPeace #ArtForPeace #PeaceBuilders #TogetherForPeace #WorldPeace #PeacefulFuture #PeaceAndHarmony
