Adaptation plans to climate change needed - Only about 20% of companies reviewed in a new S&P Global report have disclosed an adaptation plan. And less than half are planning to implement their adaptation plans within the next decade, implying that companies' progress on adapting to climate change is not keeping pace with worsening climate hazards. Some companies are not prioritizing adaptation planning, which could ultimately increase the cost to adapt, and the amount of change required. Sectors indirectly exposed to physical climate risks--such as communications services, information technology, and consumer discretionary--could see rising exposure, absent adaptation. Healthy ecosystems and the services they provide are crucial to human wellbeing and our ability to address environmental challenges. However, as climate change intensifies, it puts pressures on these ecosystems to provide the necessary services. Countries need to focus on reducing emissions but also ensure building resilience to the impacts of climate change. The latest #AdaptationGap report by UN Environment Programme underpins the strides made by countries in adaptation actions but it is not commensurate with the challenge. The report highlights that countries need to accelerate the scale and speed at which adaptation actions take place. National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are one of the most important ways a country can adapt to climate change, according to experts. But what are NAPs and how do they help build resilience? Scroll through our carousel to learn more about national adaptation plans! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d7ghUjbk Take our new training course and learn how to integrate nature into national adaptation planning 👉 https://lnkd.in/d6vRB6b8

🌍 National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) 🌱 The Paris Agreement emphasizes the importance of adaptation planning, urging countries to enhance their climate resilience by developing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). These plans are essential for formulating strategies to tackle climate change impacts and building long-term resilience. Countries are encouraged to engage in adaptation processes and implement relevant actions, policies, and strategies. You can explore more on the development of NAPs through resources provided by UNFCCC and NAP Central, which support countries in creating or improving their adaptation plans. Key Insights: NAPs are vital for enhancing the climate resilience of nations, especially in developing countries. As of March 2021, many developing countries have either developed or initiated NAP processes. The darker shades in the map indicate countries with a NAP in place, while lighter shades represent countries that have started the process. Let’s continue supporting the development of strong, actionable adaptation plans that ensure resilience in the face of climate change. 🌱 For more on NAPs and how they shape climate action, check out NAP Central and learn more from the UNFCCC website. #NationalAdaptationPlans #ClimateResilience #ParisAgreement #ClimateAction #Adaptation #SustainableDevelopment #NAPs #UNFCCC #ClimateChange #GlobalAction #ClimateAdaptation #Sustainability #ClimatePolicy

🔳📗 CLIMATE ADAPTATION COSTING IN A CHANGING WORLD — Valuing Climate Adaptation Helps Us Orient Our Compass Toward Effective and Resilient Pathways. The World Bank. 🌐 May 2024. _______ THE IMPACTS of climatic shocks are already being felt [across Europe] and are bound to intensify in line with further climate change. Even rapid and far-reaching progress on decarbonization cannot avoid the extent of climate change that is already locked in due to past emissions. These trends call for urgent climate adaptation investment strategies that can prepare countries for a wide range of climate hazards and their complex impacts across communities and economic sectors. However, formulating concrete investment strategies can be challenging as adaptation needs are vast and difficult to estimate. To overcome this challenge… THIS REPORT REVIEWS evidence-based prioritization and costing approaches and illustrates their application in a series of case studies. These approaches can support policy makers in identifying bankable and effective adaptation investments, raising and allocating adequate financing, and thus ultimately facilitating more effective climate change adaptation [across Europe]. 🔷 ACCESS: https://lnkd.in/emjxRUfQ ✅ _______ 🖌 Art. In 2023, we witnessed unprecedented weather extremes, with temperature records being shattered and natural disasters causing widespread devastation. From multi-year droughts in East Africa to floods in China and Europe, and extreme heat and wildfires in the United States and Canada, climate risks are on the rise. As we face the increasing impact of these risks, narrowing the adaptation finance gap is crucial. Investments in adaptation can offer high benefits in terms of reducing climate risks and improving equity and climate justice. However, if left unchecked, climate risks will inevitably lead to more climate-related losses and damages. That's why the Adaptation Gap Report 2023 (AGR 2023) emphasizes the importance of loss and damage support for vulnerable developing countries. In the wake of the decision at the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, the report calls for the establishment of a loss and damage fund and funding arrangements to support those who need it most. #climatechange #adaptation #climatejustice #sustainability

IPCC assessments reports can be daunting to comb through and derive actionable information. The summary reports do a good job at deriving the key messages. But again, the 'and then' part of the story needs to be told. Kenya has recently released funds for adaption actions Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program which fits into the action. Interested in knowing more about national actions, international collaboration, climate finance and more? My colleagues Patricia Nying'uro, HSC, Winnie Asiti Khaemba and Dr. Joyce Kimutai and I teamed up to write this report on Climate change impacts in Kenya https://lnkd.in/duiWCd6H

Personal Perspective on Climate Adaptation Negotiations: Post -3- Article 7 of the #Paris Agreement sets adaptation to #climatechange as a core objective, calling for enhanced adaptive capacity, strengthened resilience, and reduced #vulnerability, all within the context of sustainable development and the global temperature goal. #Adaptation activities span five components: observation, assessment of climate impacts and vulnerability, planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of adaptation actions. While adaptation actions should be country-driven, the importance of international cooperation and communication cannot be overstated. Adaptation policy must urgently address #climate change's current impacts while building future resilience. From a #climatejustice perspective, advocating for more ambitious adaptation measures is crucial for a just future. Countries in the Global South, historically contributing the least to global carbon emissions, are already significantly impacted by climate change and require substantial adaptation efforts. Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and certain communities in the Global North, such as the First Nations in Canada, also face significant vulnerabilities. On a national level: National Adaptation Plans, #NAPs, should include both national policy and ground-level evaluations, emphasizing participatory, inclusive, and bottom-up initiatives. Monitoring and evaluation should integrate existing and new data, ensuring flexible and adaptable guidelines. Effective tracking of NAPs attracts future funding and ensures #sustainabledevelopment alignment.
