Join us tomorrow at the Digital Innovation Pavilion at #COP29 in #Baku! - 10:30 am, Blue Zone. 🌊 #Oceans – through the #blueeconomies – are responsible for $2.5 trillion of economic impact annually but receive far less focus and investment compared to terrestrial-focused #SDGs, in part because of a physical disconnect between people and the oceans. 🐠 At Planet2050, we believe that digital technologies can help bridge this gap, offering tools to better monitor, manage, and protect marine ecosystems and enabling greater transparency in blue markets. 🛰 Emerging technologies can help unlock new ways to mobilise communities, track environmental impact more precisely, and streamline blue finance investments to drive meaningful change for ocean ecosystems. 🔵 Especially, we see an increasing attention to the benefits of #bluecarbon projects focusing on coastal and marine ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. 🦀 These ecosystems sequester carbon 3-5 times faster per hectare than terrestrial forests, holding an estimated 1-2 billion tons of CO₂ annually in their biomass and soils. They also provide key services and benefits to local communities, sources of revenues and flood protection. 💲 Blue Carbon projects have historically been developed naturally by local communities, governments and development banks. However, the potential of Public Finance is limited and private capital can be mobilized more broadly for ecosystem restoration and conservation through international standards in the carbon markets. Lucas Zaehringer will share some of the work of Planet2050 in the field focusing on Blue ecosystems and present the "Ocean Flagship" from BC100+, the multi-stakeholder initiative in support of the UN Charter values and the SDGs. ✊ We look forward to the discussion with our panel speakers sharing from very diverse backgrounds and how overall digital solutions can help tackle diverse key ocean-related issues. Terrestrial and ocean ecosystems are intrinsically connected, yet their conservation efforts often remain siloed. Here’s where digital technology can revolutionize the way we protect biodiversity: 💡 Data Integration: Emerging tech like AI and blockchain can unify datasets on species, ecosystems, and climate impacts, enabling cross-ecosystem funding models that account for interdependencies between oceans and terrestrial habitats. 💰 Transparent Funding: Digital platforms can enhance the traceability of biodiversity funds, ensuring that investments in ocean conservation also complement terrestrial biodiversity goals and vice versa. 📱 Inclusive Participation: Technology bridges gaps by amplifying voices from coastal and indigenous communities, empowering them to access funding opportunities that were previously out of reach. 🌐 Global Collaboration: Platforms powered by digital tools make it easier to coordinate international efforts, aligning priorities across governments, NGOs, and private investors. As someone deeply invested in ocean literacy and conservation, I’m excited about the opportunities these innovations bring to create holistic biodiversity funding systems that recognize the interconnectedness of ecosystems.
