EBIC, in partnership with the European Consortium of the Organic-Based Fertilizer Industry (ECOFI), the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP), and Eurofema, co-hosted a #webinar titled “Animal By-Products in the EU Fertilising Products Regulation: Enhancing Circularity, Ensuring Safety, and Supporting Competitiveness.” The webinar offered a platform for EBIC and its industry partners to spotlight the critical regulatory barriers that currently limit the use of ABPs in fertilising products on the EU market. EBIC emphasised the importance of a joint approach between industry and regulators to resolve these policy incoherencies. As part of the broader industry alliance, EBIC joined ECOFI and ESPP in a renewed plea to the European Commission to ensure that competitiveness is not compromised by stringent #regulations that force companies to disclose sensitive commercial information as a condition for market access. This marks a crucial milestone in shaping a new EU agri-food policy that prioritizes innovation and competitiveness as key drivers of both economic and environmental sustainability, according to a Euroseeds press release. Launched by President von der Leyen in January, the SDA has facilitated intensive discussions over the past six months. Chaired by Professor Peter Strohschneider, the dialogue engaged representatives from 30 diverse organizations, including financial institutions, farmer groups, industries, and NGOs. The resulting report, over 100 pages long, reflects the wide range of perspectives and opinions from the group. During a joint press conference, President von der Leyen emphasized the report’s significance as a foundation for the “vision for agriculture” she first announced during the early days of her Commission. This vision aims to chart a new course for EU agricultural policy, balancing the needs of sustainability with economic growth, the release notes. “It is obvious that not all participants share all the views expressed and all the recommendations put forward in this report. It is very much a compromise text that contains a lot of language offering different angles for interpretation,” Garlich von Essen, Secretary and CEO of Euroseeds, commented following the press conference. Euroseeds was represented on the SDA by its President Michael Gohn and provided both its general views to the discussions and its specific expertise in relation to the potential of plant breeding and other innovative technologies for a better future for Europe’s agriculture. The report itself is more than one hundred pages long and the breadth of views and differences of opinion are clearly noticeable. This reflects the very diverse composition of the group which was made up by the representatives of 30 different stakeholder organisations encompassing financial institutions, farmer organisations, industries and NGOs. “There was clear agreement that agriculture and food are of strategic importance for Europe,” von Essen said. ..."

Since its launch in 2020, the Farmÿng project has brought together numerous European partners who are convinced of the need to reinvent our agricultural and food systems to meet high demand and find sustainable solutions to climate challenges. The ambition of the Farmÿng project is to see insect proteins integrated into animal feed as well as into our soils, through insect-based fertilizers.  Today, let’s look back at this project through some key figures 📊 • 73: This is the number of months dedicated to launching this project and commercializing insect proteins for animals and plants. • 19 European partners from 8 countries have come together around this project to see insect proteins emerge as an effective solution to meet the growing demand in animal feed and plant nutrition markets. • 1 industrial site being launched in the Hauts-de-France region, one of the largest vertical farms in the world! A major site that embodies the ambition of the project. • 3 flagship products: Based on beetles, an insect protein oil and flour are produced at this site to feed animals. ✨ Time to celebrate! We're very proud to announce the successful completion of an innovative project supported by the National Innovation Fund through the Bulgarian SME Promotion Agency. The project, titled "Innovative services for emerging bio-based industries: parametrization of key industrial indicators for insect bio-valorization of low-value organic streams" marks a significant achievement for both Nasekomo and RVS Ruse. 🤝 The partnership between Nasekomo and the Bulgarian certifyed testing laboratory RVS Ruse, has generated scientifically validated data essential for optimizing and managing bio-valorization factories using insects. For the first time, both laboratory and near-production environment data have been established, framing optimal parameters for the efficient and profitable operation of such factories. What we have achieved? In short: 👇 🔸 Nasekomo, the first and only industrial producer of high-quality insect protein for the feed industry in Eastern Europe, based in Bulgaria, developed a new service module to assess the technical feasibility and profitability of bio-valorization factories. 🔹 RVS Ruse, with over 87 years of experience in testing food and feed, conducted extensive research on insect-derived organic fertilizer - the "frass," and is preparing documentation to expand its accreditation scope to include this new service. 🔸 The scientific research conducted on amino acid determination methods and the physical-chemical properties of insect products contributes valuable data to the industry.  🐛 As the industrial insect farming sector addresses the sustainability issues of feed ingredients and the growing demand for protein, this project is a vital step towards offering a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources like soy and fish meal. 🛎 #OENOOne: NEW research #article available in #OpenAccess 🍇 "To what extent can a phase-out of pesticides in viticulture be achieved? Learning from the efforts of a large farm network after 10 years" 🤔 What was the goal of this #research? This study aimed to describe the achievements of the network’s viticultural sector, as its perennial #crop is heavily reliant on #pesticide applications. How was this study carried out? The authors of this research article chose a sample of 343 #wine-growing systems across mainland France, analysed records of their #vineyard operations from before they joined the network, and compared them to those from the 2017-2020 period. 👀 How did they do? They used the Treatment Frequency Index (TFI) to assess pesticide reliance together with other techno-economical parameters: production costs, workloads, greenhouse #gasemissions and #disease control. 🔎 What were the results? A significant decrease in pesticide use was found over the whole #study period, with, for instance, an average TFI reduction of 24 %, which is consistent with national objectives but unmatched outside of the network. The authors of this study observed an overall shift towards pesticide inputs with lower repercussions on #health or the #environment, as well as different TFI reduction trajectories based on initial pesticide dependency. 🍃 The authors described the alternative practices introduced to the systems, and the results suggest that reductions in pesticide use stem from quite small and minor changes made to the cropping systems. These new practices only slightly lowered the vineyards’ technical and economical performances in specific situations involving an indepth revamping of the systems; e.g., conversion to #organic viticulture.
