Moving towards a more sustainable and healthy food system for everyone.
What are the consequences of obtaining 90% of the world’s food calories from a handful of plants? 🌱🌾🌿 Intensive agriculture of these crops leads to reduced biodiversity: since the 1900s, some 75% of plant genetic diversity has been lost to genetically uniform, high-yielding varieties. Maize, wheat and rice production is also becoming increasingly vulnerable to #ClimateChange and extreme weather events threatening global #FoodSecurity. 🌍🔥 At the same time, there's a whole world of forgotten crops that can offer innovative solutions. They can offer a richer array of micronutrients, fiber, and proteins, while helping to restore #SoilHealth, and reducing inputs such as water and fertilisers. 💧 Read the full article on FoodUnfolded 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBt-m9xX How can we help build more robust, diverse, and nutritionally rich #FoodSystems? #ImprovingFoodTogether #FutureOfFood #SustainableFood Article by Benedetta Gori

#Diversification means #Resilience 🎯. Our diet is less diverse, more dependent on a bunch of cereals🌾, not always performing well while thriving with #ClimateChange🔊. We need to change our #strategy and educate our #clients while we help preserve #biodiversity and foster #FarmToFork strategies (not for new-age attitude, but because a short chain is less sensible to get broken). A lot of work has been done by agronomists and farmers (let's say from seed to product)🌱🧑🏻🌾. But we can improve our performances and knowledge in the 2nd step (from shelf to fork)🛒🍽️. We normally rely on 4 to 5 cereals for our menus and diets. A #boring menu generates a #standardized agriculture, very productive, but not resilient. Let's get curious, creative and embrace #diversity as a treasure🪙. Thanks to EIT Food for their slideshare and communication on the matter. We need you🫵🏻🍎 V.🐞

🧬 Biotalys has introduced BioFun-8, a groundbreaking biofungicide program targeting Alternaria, a persistent and damaging fungal disease impacting fruits, vegetables, and specialty crops worldwide. Through its AGROBODY 2.0 technology, Biotalys aims to develop an advanced biocontrol that will help growers reduce crop loss due to Alternaria, which has become increasingly resistant to chemical treatments. Dr. Carlo Boutton, Chief Scientific Officer at Biotalys, emphasized the urgency of tackling fungal diseases that “reduce yields, stunt growth, and infest soil.” BioFun-8 is set to enhance Biotalys' pipeline alongside other biocontrol solutions, such as EVOCA for botrytis and powdery mildew, which is currently awaiting regulatory approval in the US and EU. 🔗 For more data: https://ow.ly/KzaY50TVN3l Would you consider biocontrols like BioFun-8 a game-changer for sustainable agriculture? 🌾💬 #SustainableAg #Biocontrol #CropProtection #Biotalys #AgriculturalInnovation

***NEWS*** The UK government has announced new legislation to support precision breeding technology, aimed at enhancing food security and boosting investment in the sector. In the harnessing of gene editing, crops that are more nutritious, resistant to pests, and resilient to climate change can be developed. This innovative approach will not only increase food production and reduce costs for farmers but also promote environmental recovery by reducing pesticide use. Minister for Food Security, Daniel Zeichner, highlighted the importance of food security as a national priority and the need for a simpler regulatory process, making it easier for SMEs to bring new products to market. With ongoing research into crops like vitamin D-rich tomatoes and pesticide-resistant sugar beet, the UK is set to become a leader in agri-food innovation. This legislation is a crucial step toward strengthening our agricultural sector while supporting farmers and protecting our environment. ☘️ 🌲 Link to article: https://lnkd.in/dhaPWXV8 #Sustainability #Innovation #GeneEditing #Crops #UK #Legislation #FoodSecurity #Environment

𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://lnkd.in/dErNKaM9 🔑 Key Takeaways: 🌱 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁 & 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Leveraging wild relatives has been crucial in tackling major wheat diseases like rust and blast. Without this, fungicide usage would have doubled, increasing the risk of fungicide resistance! 🌍 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Innovations in wheat breeding have saved over a billion liters of fungicide applications, improving ecological outcomes and preserving millions of hectares of natural ecosystems. 🧬 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Biofortification has been a game-changer, introducing nutrient-dense wheat varieties that combat global micronutrient deficiencies, especially in iron and zinc. 📈 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: New breeding technologies, gene editing tools, and systematic PGR screenings offer promising opportunities to create climate-resilient wheat varieties that thrive in extreme conditions and boost food security. This is a reminder of how wild relatives and cross-breeding are driving sustainable agriculture, much like our novel cereal crop species Tritordeum and DDRR 🌾 — hybrids that are paving the way for a sustainable, technological, nutritious, and flavorful future. #Wheat #Tritordeum #Ddrr #Sustainability #AgTech #FoodSecurity #PlantBreeding #WildRelatives #ClimateResilience
