Circular Economy 🔄 = Zero Waste 🚮 It’s Zero Waste Week, which means it’s time to think about the way we use everyday materials. The traditional ‘take, make, waste’ model of consumption only adds to landfills and squanders valuable resources, so we need a more circular approach. In the circular economy products are made to be reused at their highest possible value and waste is designed out of the system from the get-go (either by eliminating it or treating it as a resource for something else) , so a circular economy = zero waste. Businesses can learn more about the circular economy and how to embed these principles in their products and processes at CEIC’s fully-funded programme starting later this month. ♻️Where SMR Fits into the Circular Economy🌍 Thank you CEIC Wales for giving us a great visual to explain the circular economy and how it differs from the traditional linear model. We thought this would be a great chance to explain how SMR fits into this model, specifically in the context of reinstatement projects. In traditional reinstatement projects, we see a linear economy in action, where 100% of excavated sub-base waste is sent to landfill, and new Type 1 material is imported. This results in: ➡ Depletion of valuable landfill space ➡ Increased demand for natural resources ➡ Unnecessary transportation emissions from exporting waste and importing new material While Type 1 recycling facilities are moving us towards a recycling economy by recovering excavated material; ➡ Only up to 40% of material can be recovered ➡ Only good material such as crushed and recycled curbs are currently being recovered ➡ Therefore, a minimum of 60% of waste is still being sent to landfill That’s where SMR comes in, taking things a step further to fully embrace the circular economy. 🌱 With SMR, up to 100% of excavated material can be re-used, creating a superior backfill product that: 🔄 Diverts waste from landfill 🌿 Eliminates the need for importing natural resources 🚛 Reduces CO2 emissions from the transportation of materials By adopting SMR, we’re closing the loop on waste, supporting the environment, and creating more sustainable reinstatement practices. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #SMR #WasteReduction #Innovation #GreenSolutions #CEIC #RecyclingEconomy
