With the new Kerbside standardisation collection now if effect, only those plastic packaging items marked #1, #2 & #5 can go in your recycling bins. Lids off and make sure items are rinsed and clean! No film (Soft Plastics) items. Polystyrene recycling is failing and was never possible. That is according to a new report by the Guardian. In March 2021 the Morrison government announced expanded polystyrene used to package and protect a wide range of consumer products would be phased out by the middle of 2023. This didn’t happen. ❌ Because plastic is NOT circular ❌ There AREN’T enough facilities ❌ And too many FALSE claims In fact, the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (Apco) declared there was “no viable alternative” to polystyrene. And THAT is the only part they’re wrong about. 🔍 𝗨𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲: Recycling rate vs. recycled content - what’s the difference? 🌍 Did you know that recycling rate and recycled content are two different measures of circularity in glass packaging? Here’s a quick breakdown. The recycling rate is a measure of the proportion of glass packaging put on the market in a specific geographical area by fillers and importers which, after consumer use, is collected and recycled. 👉 Recycling rate in EU in 2022: 75,6% Recycled content is on the other hand proportion of recycled material in a specific product. 👉 EU average: 52% recycled content in glass containers* 👉 Vetropack: Average recycled glass content of 56% in 2023, with green glass cullet accounting for 69%. We aim to increase the overall share of recycled content to 70% by 2030 by operating our own cullet treatment plants to ensure quality and raising awareness about glass recycling. While both are important, increasing the recycling rate improves the availability of high quality recycled glass (cullet), which directly increases the recycled content in new packaging. Insightful piece highlighting importance as part of circular economy for glass having high recycling rate and also having high recycled content rate. Sustainability is a complex subject when you look at all the trades offs in getting consumer products to market.

It is about blooming time! We all know recycling is a massive problem in the UK! For a start not a single local authorities in the UK have the same recycling policies All have different material recycled or collected. Saying this, it is about to change in 2026 with the "simpler recycling" policy that was voted October 2023. Secondly one of my biggest pet aches is that so many products that are made out of recyclable plastic are not collected and as a result ends up in landfill. One of them that every single household uses is the modest plant pot. Commonly made out of polypropylene (PP) it is easily recycled but sadly not widely done. I am not sure I know a single authority in this country that collect them kerbside (please tell me i am wrong in the comments) but that about to change too. From 2026 every councils will have to collect non black plant pots. Why not black I hear you say? Well black polypropylene contains a carbon additive to make it black which create issues in the recycling process (more about this later). I guess the solution for me would be to ban black plant pot as part of the single use act and that would sort this issue, it is not that difficult to do if only they wanted recycling to be better at 10 Downing Street.
