Musicians, do you remember the first song that lit you up inside?
Authors, what was the first book that grabbed you and wouldn’t let go?
Actors, how many dozens…how many hundreds of performances did you see before you saw “the one”? The one that opened your eyes to what was possible, that flipped a switch in you, that made you say, “THIS is what I want to create.”
Yesterday, I heard that audiobook.
The book was Stephen King’s “You Like It Darker,” narrated by Will Patton - not that it matters much, since our reaction to art is so subjective. It lit my boiler in a big way, but there’s no guarantee it’ll do the same for you.
I could list all the things I loved about the performance, assuming I had the stamina to write it and you had the patience to read it. But the way that audiobook hit me…it’s something more complex, and more simple, than bullet points can capture.
I can tell you this about the performance: It made me cry.
I cried because it was so perfect. I cried because I might never create anything as good. And I cried because finally, I can see what’s possible.
The switch is flipped. I know what I want to create.
