🌍 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲" Amy Webb's renowned annual letter forecasts a period of explosive technological advancement. She describes it as the "perfect storm of innovation, where breakthroughs in various technologies collide and amplify each other." But as the Technology Supercycle gains momentum and the world enters this period of unprecedented breakthroughs, the focus on equitable, sustainable, and scalable solutions has never been more critical. This comprehensive report explores 34 key signals and trends across eleven primary categories, offering critical insights for policymakers, researchers, and innovators. Here’s a closer look at the findings and their implications for the future. A Future-Oriented Approach The report, part of the FUTURINNOV project, underscores the importance of anticipatory thinking in a world marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). By examining emerging technologies and breakthrough innovations, the JRC and EIC aim to support strategic intelligence and inform funding decisions that shape the European Union’s (EU) innovation landscape. Methodology: Rigorous and Systematic The methodology employed in this report involves a meticulous literature review, capturing signals from 186 third-party reports and articles. These signals were evaluated and categorized into eleven primary categories, ranging from Health and Mobility to Space and Advanced Manufacturing. The process ensures a balanced representation of technologies across different maturity levels, aligning with the EIC’s diverse funding mechanisms. Key Findings: Cross-Sectoral Convergences One of the most striking aspects of the report is the convergence of technologies across different sectors. For instance, the Health category reveals significant overlaps with Advanced Materials and Consumer Electronics, particularly in the development of flexible brain-machine interfaces and spatial omics. These technologies hold promise for personalized medicine and advanced therapeutic approaches. In the Mobility sector, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving sustainability and safety innovations. Engineered bacteria for sustainable aviation fuel and AI-powered simulations for autonomous vehicles highlight the sector’s potential to reduce carbon footprints and enhance operational efficiency. Therefore I’m excited that ZAKA VC joined a €1.7 million pre-seed round for ExoMatter, an AI-driven leader in materials research, alongside Vanagon.vc, Bayern Kapital, 212 NexT, Bloomhaus Ventures AG, and four female super angels from encourageventures e.V.. ExoMatter’s AI-powered platform accelerates material discovery for specific applications while minimizing environmental impact. By leveraging extensive scientific data, the platform enables companies to reduce development costs by 90% and CO₂ emissions by 80%. Founded by Josua Vieten (CEO) and Barbara Bachus (COO), ExoMatter combines scientific expertise with entrepreneurial insight.
